Increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have led to the scientifically recognized phenomenon known as global climate change, or global warming. The average global surface temperature has already increased by about 1 degree F (0.6 degrees C) over the past century and if emissions of GHGs continue unabated experts forecast it will rise 2.5 to 10.4 degrees F (1.4 to 5.8 degrees C) by 2100. Documented impacts of climate change include: more frequent and severe droughts and storms; changes in agricultural productivity and water supplies; sea level rise; and damage to vulnerable ecosystems such as coral reefs.
