- Quick and Easy Storage and Publishing of Environmental Monitoring Data Software

0

Port-Log is a quick and easy storage and publishing solution for environmental data acquired by different monitoring techniques and sensors. It is offered by OceanWise as an on-line Service or as part of a comprehensive System deployed on your servers. Port-Log is designed to be instrument and transmission independent, so that it can be used flexibly and comprehensively within most applicable environments.

The ability to store environmental monitoring data securely for future use and then being able to publish it in near real-time or historically on the web is a common requirement. Acquiring and implementing the technologies necessary to achieve this can be complex and costly.

As an on-line Service using latest web technologies, Port-Log is easy to set up, low risk and cost effective. Native sensor output is sent directly to the Port-Log virtual server, where it is decoded and loaded onto a secure database – standard or customised web pages access and visualise the data, either in near real-time for operational purposes, or as historical summaries for situational awareness and analysis. Customers of the Port-Log Service are provided with three levels of secure login, providing access to the Service for upload, view and download or view only. These levels may be granted to third parties, as required, or the data published openly over the Internet. Individual and secure web pages are set up for each customer (or survey or site location), each with its own URL. Web pages are the same for each instance or level of access, or optionally can be tailored to meet specific requirements. With view and download access, data may be downloaded in full, or a subset queried and downloaded, for subsequent processing, analysis or presentation using standard desktop applications.

Deployed in an office or on-site, Port-Log System provides the foundation for a complete in-house real-time and historic environmental data management system. At its core is an instance of Ocean Database (ODB) installed on a server and RDBMS provided either by the customer’s IT department, preferred supplier or installed and supported by OceanWise. Decoder or extract, load and transform software running on the server provides the link to instrument real-time data feeds or stored output, respectively. The same levels of access to the data are provided by standard or customised web pages used in the Port-Log Service. In addition, standard desktop applications may connect directly to the database to facilitate subsequent processing, analysis and presentation. Typical applications include Microsoft Excel, MATLAB and GIS. Third party extensions, such as the OceanWise Maritime Toolbar for Cadcorp SIS, provides additional functionality.

Ocean Database (ODB)
At the core of Port-Log is the OceanWise ODB, comprising unique data tables and relationships that are capable of storing many types of simple and complex environmental monitoring data. The data tables are set up using pre-prepared scripts according to which particular instrument or sampling regime is incorporated. These scripts may be extended at any time to include other data types, as required. Supplementary tables store associated parameters used in quality control and metadata creation, and divide the data into temporally or spatially referenced blocks for easier identification and management. ODB is realisable in most proprietary and open source database management systems, including Oracle, MS SQL and MySQL, the latter being used on the Port-Log Service.

Instrument Types
Port-Log can handle binary and text data from a range of instrument manufacturers including Valeport, Nortek and Teledyne RDI. Native formats are transmitted and decoded before being loaded to the ODB specially formulated tables. None of the data richness is lost but instead, it is retained for subsequent review and analysis.
