The 10-Hour DOT Hazmat Transportation Training course is for employees who are involved in the packaging, marking, labeling, placarding, and transporting of hazardous materials. In short, every worker employed in an industry that handles the transport of hazardous materials must complete the DOT 10-Hour advanced general awareness training in order to protect their own safety and that of others. The DOT classifies hazmat employees as those who:

Load, unload, or handle hazardous materials;
Prepare hazardous materials for transportation;
Operate a vehicle used in the transportation of hazardous materials;
Are responsible for the security of hazardous materials while in transport; and
Manufacture, test, repair, mark, or modify containers, drums, or other packaging used in the transport of hazardous materials.

Employees whose job function directly affects the safe transportation of hazardous materials must receive the DOT Hazmat Transportation Training within 90 days after employment or a change in job function. Hazmat employees must receive recurrent training at least once every three years to remain in compliance with federal law. For employees engaged in the transportation of hazardous materials by air, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires DOT hazmat regulation training once every two years.
