Learning the skills to be a successful wetland delineator is an ongoing process. It is more than taking a one–week class. It requires keeping updated with the latest regulation changes, technical updates and advances in wetland science. The field skills are perishable and without frequent practice they are lost. Over the years we have heard from students about the challenges of taking a wetland delineation class, working for a few weeks in wetlands and then not having another wetland project for a couple of months. When they start the new project, they have lost their edge and feel like they are starting over. It is a lot like going to the gym for the first time. Hop on an elliptical for 15 minutes and you feel great. A few hours later the pain comes. You work through the pain and go back to the gym. After a couple of days, you have no more pain. But, if you take some time off from the gym it is as if you never been there before and the pain returns.

Training Courses Overview
The secret to no pain is to keep going on a daily basis and wetland skills are exactly the same. For example, you spend 20 minutes keying out a sedge. For the rest of the day you see the same sedge and you quickly inventory it. Take a few weeks off and when you see the sedge you are not sure, was that a bottle brush, shallow or porcupine sedge? The plant identification skill has been lost and you are back to keying the sedge out which turns out to be hop sedge.
The same is true for identifying soil indicators and hydrology features. You know what to do from your basic training, you are just slow at getting the job done. The problem is that you have lots of work in front of you and you are frustrated at how long it is taking. Shortcuts are not an option given all of the attention wetland delineations have in court. So, you will just have to work through the pain, again!
The good news is that we have a solution!
Part 1 Wetland Delineation Basic Training
Our master wetland delineator program is a year–long program that give you the skill practice you need to keep sharp. We start with our 12-week online Basic Wetland Delineation Workshop which gives you all of the training you need on identifying and documenting a wetland community. We also give you detailed instruction on how to delineate the wetland and upland boundary. This includes training on both the 1987 USACOE Wetland Delineation Manual as well as the subsequent Regional Supplements. You will have access to all 10 USACOE regions in our Regional Supplement library.
However, this is just the beginning of your training.
PWS Pre-Approval:
This course has been pre-approved by the Society of Wetland Scientists Professional Certification Program (SWSPCP) as meeting standards for content and instruction and, upon successful completion, has been judged to be immediately eligible to receive credits and/or points toward SWSPCP Professional Certification or SWSPCP Professional.
Part 2 Wetland Skills Mastery Program
Once you are out of basic training, we then enroll you into our Master Wetland Skills program. This includes bi-weekly presentations and workshops designed to keep you fresh with the latest updates and skill sets. Every two weeks we have a short training presentation specifically focused on a specific skill set. Each workshop is about an hour or so to complete and is online and on-demand so that you can easily fit it into your busy schedule.
It is hard to do this alone. Everybody needs some encouragement and accountability from a trusted partner. Access to a personal wetland trainer is part of this program. This person will be there for you during basic training to help and guide you through the process. Once you graduate basic training this coach will help you with the weekly workshops, clarifying, guiding and keeping you on track with the program. They are just an email, text or phone call away to help you on your wetland career journey.
