Delegates will look at both everyday products an more hazardous compounds and substances. The course will also identify the importance of assessing both the items that the delegate and others may bring onto their site/premises and what others will have delivered and use on the site.

The COSHH Awareness Course will give delegates an understanding of related legislation such as; HASWA 1974, COSHH Regulations (1988) amended 2002, EH40 (2005 Workplace Exposure Limits – WEL), Personal Protective Equipment Regulations (1992) and COSH – a brief guide (indigo 136 – Rev 5) – a downloadable pamphlet.

The practical use of control measures, monitoring of exposure, health surveillance, arrangements to deal with accidents/incidents and emergencies, can all be a very low risk in your business or it may be extremely important given the nature of your company’s work.

There may be a need to understand such concerns regarding carcinogenic substances and to have basic understanding of how to assess and manage complex chemical storage and usage. Alternatively it may be important to understand naturally occurring hazards.

If you have a more complex site or site activities, it is recommended that you speak to the centre and can advise if this course is suitable and sufficient or if a more detailed course is required – which is available. Your choice of course should in every case give the attendees a basic level of competence (skills, knowledge, experience and qualifications).

This half-day COSHH Awareness course focuses on the basic understanding of the COSHH regulations. It will also develop the delegate’s ability to successfully risk assess the chemicals or naturally occurring substances and/or compounds on their site, or place of work.

The step by step overview will ensure that delegates have a basic competence to undertake the review using all of the associated documentation and information.

On completion delegates will also be able to detail any further recommendations, outstanding actions, additional training and future control measures. It will provide a standard level of competency, but equally should identify limitations too and where additional guidance, support and knowledge should be sought.

If the delegate’s site or place of work utilises or stores very hazardous, highly complex chemicals, then again, a more in-depth course would be recommended.

This COSHH Awareness course will cover the following topic areas:

  • Legal responsibilities: HASWA etc ACT 1974
  • COSHH Regulations – 1988 amended 2002
  • EH40 2005
  • COSHH symbols
  • PPE regulations 1992
  • Brief Guide to COSHH – HSE document downloadable from the HSE website Indg136 Rev 5
The course will end with a short test and upon successful completion delegates will be issued with a CHSG certificate.
