Our HAZWOPER 16-hour class is based on the OSHA HAZWOPER Standard, found in 29 CFR 1910.120. It is designed to be taken after an initial 24-hour course. Participants who complete HAZWOPER 16-Hour for All Industries will be better equipped for working with hazardous materials, as well as steps that can be taken to keep themselves and their team safe.

To fully comply with OSHA HAZWOPER regulations, students will also need to obtain additional site-specific training, along with two days of actual field experience under the direct supervision of a trained supervisor. The 16-hour HAZWOPER training certification does not count towards these two days of field experience.

NOTE: Students must have completed a HAZWOPER 24-hour course as required by the OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.120 before taking this course.

OSHA requires varying levels of HAZWOPER training depending on the workload of different professionals.

This course covers the following topics that build on those outlined in the prerequisite course:

  • Medical surveillance
  • Respiratory protection
  • Exposure monitoring
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Hazardous substances as defined in EPA and DOT standards 40 CFR 261.3 and 49 CFR 171.8
  • Emergency response, including hazardous materials response (HAZMAT)

This course is intended for professionals with 24 hours of previous HAZWOPER training. Specifically, the following workers are required by OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.120, paragraph (e)(3)(i) to reach 40 total hours of HAZWOPER training:

  • Those who are likely to be exposed to hazardous materials over the permissible and published exposure limits
  • Those whose work regularly requires the use of respirators
  • Supervisors and managers who are directly responsible for overseeing workers engaged in hazardous waste operations*

Upon completion of this 16-Hour HAZWOPER course, participants will have received HAZWOPER compliance training as outlined under OSHA standard 1910.120(e)(3)(iv). Further, they will have minimized  potential for citation and penalty by OSHA under standard 1910.120. Additionally, participants will have gained further familiarity with the following important workplace principles:

  • Respiratory hazard and protection
  • Emergency HAZMAT
  • Respirator operation
  • Selecting and using PPE and protective clothing
  • Hazardous waste detector and monitor identification
  • Soil analysis and sloping, benching, and shoring

This course also allows participants to earn 1.6 continuing education units (CEUs) and sixteen contact hour from an authorized IACET CEU provider. Once the course has successfully been completed, students will receive a certificate of completion that documents the total amount of CEUs and contact hours earned.
