What is Toxicology?
Toxicology is the study of toxins, in other words, poisons. Many industrial processes use materials that are either toxic by themselves or create materials that may be toxic (poisonous). These toxins may affect humans, plants, animals and the environment.
Why should you learn Industrial Toxicology?
Toxicology is the study of poisons. Industrial Toxicology is that branch of toxicology that deals with toxins associated with industrial processes. This is an important part of Process Safety Management, yet it finds very little coverage in any Process Safety Course. Hence Abhisam decided to create a course that will help Industry professionals understand toxicology as it applies to them.
Note that in the chemical industry and allied industries (such as Oil & Gas, petrochemicals, plastics, agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals), most materials used are toxic to some degree. There are almost no harmless substances used in these industries, we only have methods to reduce the potential harm that can be inflicted to a minimum.
Thus, Industrial Toxicology is an important part of Process Safety Management. Any industrial process has several risks associated with it. These risks may be due to the raw materials themselves being poisonous (or the intermediates in the process, or even the finished products), explosive, flammable or in other ways harmful to the environment.
In this course, we will study the toxicity mechanisms of these materials that may cause harm to not only workers inside the plant premises, but also to the general population outside, either during an accidental release or leakages while being transported or handled. If you are in any way responsible for safety of any industrial facility (including plants, storage areas, warehouses) or in charge of safety of shipping vessels or trucking, then you must be familiar with Industrial toxicology. Or you may be working for a regulatory authority or a government agency in charge of industrial safety. In all these situations this course will give you a good background in Industrial Toxicology.
