Virtual Wetland Delineation Training Course
Richard Chinn Environmental Training offers a Virtual Wetland Delineation Training Course to provide comprehensive education on wetland delineation concepts and techniques. This online program is designed as an alternative for those unable to attend live regional classes due to constraints such as the pandemic. The course consists of video lectures covering approximately 16 hours of content, paralleling the material taught in live sessions. Participants are offered the flexibility to engage with the training material and have access to the instructor, Richard Chinn, for questions through various communication modes. Additionally, the field component of the course includes video demonstrations of field protocols across different ecosystems, enhancing the practical understanding of wetland delineation. The program is pre-approved for 2.25 Credit Points toward professional certification. Upon completion, participants can attend a live on-site class within 18 months at no extra cost if desired. The course concludes with an assessment to evaluate comprehension and is supported with additional resources like soil color charts. The first section of the class is a series of videos of me delivering the lecture component of our classes, i.e., the first two days, approximately 16 hours. This is the same lecture an attendee would get in a live class. At any time while the thought is still fresh, I encourage you to pause and text message me (for short questions) or email or call me (longer, more complicated questions). I will answer your questions and re-post them, as an anonymous question, so others can benefit from the question and the answer as they would from a live classroom.
The field portion is another series of videos of me as I go through the field protocols. As in the lecture component, this will be the same discussions and demonstrations I give in a live class. Video zooms in to show up-close objects. I am going to have several field videos of different types of ecosystems and soil types to accomodate as many regions of the country as possible. Again, I will be available for questions and encourage them as they develop.
I will have office hours available by request. During these office hours, I set up a network (e.g, Zoom) so we can chat about where you are and what you need and interact. Participation during these office hours will be strongly encouraged.
I hold office hours regularly in the morning and in the late afternoon at various times.
I expect everyone to finish within 21 days, but this can be extended.
This course is pre-approved to offer 2.25 Credit Points toward Society of Wetland Scientists Professional Certification toward Wetland Professional In-Training, Professional Wetland Scientist or renewal credits.
At the end of the class, there will be an exam, but RELAX! The purpose of the exam is for me and you to assess your comprehension of the material. After grading it, I will have a one-on-one private Zoom or phone call where I will go over the missed answers (hopefully, there won’t be many missed answers).
I provide soil color charts for use during live classes. Because I will not be able to do this, each attendee will need one for the virtual class. There are two options. The standard soil color book is the Munsell Soil Color Book available from Forestry Suppliers, Amazon and others. There is at least one on-line copy at MunsellColorChart but I do not know the copyright legitimacy of this or any other online copy. The second option, actually my preference, is the Globe Professional Edition available from Forestry Suppliers . The Globe Professional Edition has many advantages over the Munsell Soil Color Book: plastic pages are more durable than paper pages, better book cover, fits in pocket, et al, but the Globe Professional Edition lacks the Charts for estimating proportions of mottles and coarse fragments which I have attached. (I do not recommend the less-expensive Globe Soil Color Book (non-Professional edition) as it lacks some chips found in the Professional Edition.)
You may attend a future live class for no additional cost even after completing the virtual class. The live class is optional but recommended.
