Landfill Gas Monitoring Applications

  • GPR

GPR and EM play an integral part by providing a non-intrusive means of examining the subsurface for environmental hazards such as soil contamination, underground storage tanks and drums. GPR can delineate landfills and pathways for contaminant flow, as well as conduct hydrogeologic investigations such as water table mapping. We offer innovative technology to support site assessment needs.

  • Air monitoring equipments for soil contamination monitoring

Previous land uses or accidental spills can result in Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) contamination of soils. Volatile and semi-volatile compounds can then permeate through the soil and may persist for several years. This contamination can be traced and measured using our Soil Probes in conjunction with our VOC sorbent tubes. Soil probes are also useful in checking the effectiveness of remediation actions. This monitoring technique provides a cost-effective identification of hazardous gases.

Measurement solution for siloxane monitoring in biogas and landfill

The generation of electricity from municipal digesters and land fill is of increasing interest, as the biogas can allow for a form of renewable energy. Organosilicon compounds often find their way into land-fill or digester gases as siloxanes. Siloxanes are low-level hazards to the atmosphere in terms of their emissions, however when they are combusted in gas engines the hard silica that is produced is very harsh to the moving parts of the gas engine.

  • Total Reduced Sulfur (S) monitoring

Total reduced sulfur(s), which include hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methyl mercaptan (methanethiol, CH3SH), dimethyl sulfide (CH3SCH3), and dimethyl disulfide (CH3S2CH3), occur naturally in the environment and can also be present in numerous industrial gaseous streams – petroleum refining, natural gas extraction, and chemical operations like the pulp/paper industry. Hydrogen sulfide is the most prevalent of the total reduced sulfurs, and is commonly found in volcanic gases, marshes and swamps, wetlands and mud flats, sulfur springs and decaying organic matter. Additionally, hydrogen sulfide is produced by living organisms, including human beings, through the digestion and metabolization of sulfur-containing materials. It must be noted that sulfur dioxide (SO2), sulfur trioxide (SO3) and sulfuric acid mist are not included in the determination of TRS, as these are oxidized sulfur compounds and are permitted and monitored separately from TRS.

  • Air monitoring equipments for outdoor & indoor air quality

Gradko’s ambient air monitoring equipment is widely used to monitor both indoor and outdoor air quality. Continuous development allows us to provide equipment for a broad range of applications, covering short-term and long-term monitoring. Pollutants can be detected even at very low levels – limits of detection are typically in the low parts per billion (ppb) range.

PEHD membrane sealing systems for retrofitting in existing landfill site

It is also possible to retrofit a monitoring system in existing surface sealing liners without impairing the synthetic liner sheet or the immediately adjacent functional layers. For this purpose, cable trenches must be dug in the recultivation layer above the drainage layer. The detection cables are then laid in these trenches.

High quality gas sensor solutions for landfill

State-of-the-art systems enabling easy monitoring of CO2 and CH4 gases. Capped Landfill Sites produce a range of gases, mostly methane and carbon dioxide. Legislation requires that these gases are safely removed from beneath the cap to avoid a physical explosion due to the build-up of pressure beneath the cap. Safe disposal usually entails burning such as flare stacks, internal combustion engines or by processing to produce Methane gas fuel. For large sites with access to power distribution infrastructure internal combustion engines are used to generate electricity which is fed into the local electricity grid. All of the above safe disposal process require the measurement of the Methane content (and in many cases the CO2 concentration). Edinburgh Sensors provide gas sensors for both Methane and CO2 that can be integrated into landfill gas processing systems enabling easy monitoring of these gases.

  • Moisture Monitoring for Natural Gas & LNG

The presence of moisture in high-pressure natural gas from production wells causes pipelines and associated valves to freeze. High moisture content also leads to the formation of hydrates of the liquid hydrocarbons present, thus causing further difficulties. The moisture content of the gas also adversely affects the calorific value of the gas, thus lowering the quality and value of the product. Moisture is therefore measured at the point of extraction, at export stations, at gas storage locations and in the transmission grid. As natural gas often contains high levels of contaminants, more complex systems are required to maintain instrument performance over prolonged periods and to verify data collected in spot-check moisture analysis.

Flow meters for the environmental flow solutions

Our flow measurement technology is ideal for applications ranging from landfill emissions to wastewater treatment and numerous applications in between. We have developed many flow meters and controllers to measure the emissions from landfills and other green house gas producers, in addition to being a long standing leader in the testing of emissions for large engines. Water treatment is also an important driver for the company as we continue to develop innovative solutions for waste water treatment.

Medical and Bio-hazard Waste Treatment Technology with zero emissions

The OZONATOR technology is the new NG-3000 model capable of processing up to 400 kg (880 lbs.) of waste every twenty minutes (1200 kg per hour) and can operate on a continuous basis 24 hours per day – 7 days per week with about one hour per week for service and cleaning. The waste is shredded with up to 90% reduction in volume and treated with a high concentration of ozone (sterilized) and then compacted into a stainless steel transport bin for disposal at landfill as general waste (daily cover) or the treated waste can be used as fuel in a WTE (waste-to-energy) facility. • Noise and vibration monitoring for oil and gas industry

The oil and gas industry requires major infrastructure in terms of refineries and offshore extraction platforms which operate continuously. A large number of essential rotating machines, structures and piping networks are subjected to high levels of demand in a difficult environment, leading to the potential for breakage.

  • Flaring Solutions for the CDM + Kyoto Protocol

ABUTEC specializes in providing advanced technology for the CDM initiative and for carbon credit projects in the landfill and waste water industries. The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which sets internationally binding emission reduction targets. There are three mechanisms within the protocol, one being the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). A CDM project must provide emission reductions that are additional to what would otherwise have occurred.

Water Quality Monitoring for the Groundwater Monitoring Industry

There are many reasons why you might want to conduct testing or water quality monitoring of groundwater. For example, you might wish to undertake groundwater modelling for a particular area to understand aquifer hydraulics. Parameters such as rhodamine are used to understand the movement of water underground. Groundwater testing would also be used to examine the effects, if any, of human activities. Leachate from landfill can find its way into groundwater, as can fertilisers from agriculture. Monitoring groundwater quality can identify the existence of a pollutant in order to mitigate any possible harmful effects.
