    The Situation

    Hydroelectric dams produce electric power by harnessing the force of the water flowing through the dam. There are numerous sources for oil spillage:

    • The hydroelectric turbines are lubricated by lubrication oils.
    • The very large water control valves are normally hydraulic powered and are lubricated with various greases and oils.
    • Vehicles including fork lifts, trucks, etc., can spill oils and fuels.

    Any accidental spillage of oil or grease or intentional wash down water containing minor amounts of oils, greases, and detergents must be collected and treated before discharge to the river. These fluids along with any water leaks are collected in sumps in the dam and are regularly pumped out. In many cases, the volume of water is substantial.

  • Measurement and control systems for the Boiler water monitoring

    In ongoing operation, the substances suspended in the boiler water are concentrated. In order to avoid the negative consequences (foaming, deposits) of excessive salt content in the boiler water, specified limit values must not be exceeded. With the aid of a desalination control valve, boiler water with concentrated content is constantly removed and replaced with clean water. If the limit values are exceeded, the conductivity limitation ensures prompt switching off of the burner(s). Foreign substances that have sunk to the bottom of the boiler are removed by briefly opening a drainage valve.

    Problem: Poor load-bearing soils pose a significant problem for transportation and construction needs. Unpaved areas, such as access roads, paths, parking lots, driveways, etc can be highly vulnerable to near-surface shear failure and rutting, especially in moist conditions or areas with higher expected loads.   • Geosynthetic Lining for Highway and Civil Applications

    GCL can be used in highway and civil applications such as at airport de-icing facilities used to remove ice build up on the surfaces of planes. During the application process, glycol-based de-icing fluids can leak into local stormwater runoff, potentially causing pollution. CETCO GCLs were found compatible with de-icing fluid (glycol diluted 50/50 with water). GCLs can also be used to line roadway drainage swales for containment and prevent excessive percolation, thereby minimizing potential for groundwater contamination. Another example of using GCL in civil and highway applications is using the liner to contain acid rock and prevent runoff from entering the local water supply.
