Elemental Analysis for RoHS & WEEE by EDXRF / XRF - Waste and Recycling - Hazardous Waste
European Union (EC) environmental legislation contributes towards a better environment but has significant implications for many manufacturing companies in terms of marketing, design, manufacturing, and "end-of-life" recovery and recycling. The Directives on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), 2002/96/EC, and the Restriction of Use of Certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS), 2002/95/EC, will require producers to recycle waste electrical/electronic equipment and remove certain hazardous substances. Specifically, RoHS provides that new electrical and electronic equipment put on the market for the first time from July 1, 2006, should not contain certain heavy metal toxins, including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and hexavalent chromium (Cr). Rigaku Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) can help manufacturers comply with RoHS/WEEE by providing rapid elemental analysis.Semiquantitative Elemental Analysis Without Standards
The Rigaku NEX CG II EDXRF is powered by qualitative and quantitative analytical software, RPF-SQX, that features Rigaku Profile Fitting (RPF) technology. The software allows semi-quantitative analysis of almost all sample types without standards—and rigorous quantitative analysis with standards. Featuring Rigaku's Scatter FP method, the software can automatically estimate the concentration of unobserved low atomic number elements (H to F) and provide appropriate corrections.
RPF-SQX greatly reduces the number of required standards for a given level of calibration fit, as compared to conventional EDXRF analytical software. As standards are expensive and can be difficult to obtain for newly developed materials, the utility of having a NEX CG spectrometer can significantly lower costs and reduce workload requirements for routine elemental analysis needs.
EDXRF, a primary type of X-ray fluorescence (XRF), provides quick, multi-element analysis in a wide range of matrices, even in the most challenging sample types. EDXRF systems are easy to use and offer low cost of ownership. These advantages make Rigaku EDXRF products a reliable choice for many applications.
