Legionella Control with Chlorine Dioxide - Health and Safety
Chlorine Dioxide has been shown to be extremely effective in the control of legionella bacteria and the prevention of Legionnaires’ Disease and Feedwater’s patented Activ-ox® system is the easiest and safest way to treat drinking, domestic and cooling water with chlorine dioxide.
Legionnaires’ Disease is a potentially fatal form of pneumonia caused by legionella bacteria which live in biofilms in water systems. Many conventional biocides are ineffective in controlling legionella and are unable to penetrate or disperse biofilms. Chlorine Dioxide, or ClO2 for short, has been shown to be extremely effective at penetrating and killing biofilms and the legionella bacteria that they harbour.
The Journal of Applied Microbiology reports that: 'Chlorine dioxide...was identified as the most efficient [continuous treatment] for controlling L. pneumophila in a domestic water system.
An investigation carried out by BSRIA into the treatment of hot and cold water systems using Chlorine Dioxide it was shown to be more effective than the traditional temperature regime in controlling both biofilms and legionella bacteria in model domestic water systems. So what makes Activ-Ox® different to other chlorine dioxide systems?
Legionella Control with Chlorine Dioxide is universally accepted as a very effective way to prevent Legionnaires' Disease - but you can’t just buy a drum of chlorine dioxide. It is in fact an unstable gas which has to be generated at point of use and dissolved in water to be able to work. Traditionally, this meant that you needed what is called a “chlorine dioxide generator”, which is a complex dosing system, expensive to buy and operate, very unreliable and which uses hazardous chemicals. A traditional ClO2 generator is, in essence, a mini chemical production plant which should only really be used by a competent operator, but unfortunately these specialist items of equipment are still being specified for all kinds of applications for which they are not suited.
When we saw the potential for chlorine dioxide to control legionella in buildings and cooling water in order to help prevent Legionnaires’ Disease, we recognised the need for a safe, efficient process for generating ClO2 that could be used by the non-specialist.
So we developed the patented Activ-Ox® process which enables us to produce an incredible 95% chlorine dioxide yield instantly, dissolved directly in the water to be treated, using low hazard chemicals. Being able to produce ClO2 instantly, on demand, has enabled us to produce a much simpler and safer dosing system, because simplicity and safety go hand in hand.
