Molecular Recognition Technolog for Catalytic Converter Recycling Industry-Waste and Recycling
IBC Advanced Technologies utilizes its proprietary Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) to recover platinum group metals, including platinum, rhodium, and palladium, from spent catalytic converters. This green and efficient method offers a significant alternative to traditional separation techniques. After the catalytic converter scrap undergoes pyrometallurgical processing, precious metals are extracted into an acidic leach solution which is then processed through MRT columns. These columns contain SuperLig resins capable of achieving 99%+ recovery levels and purities between 99.95-99.99% in a single pass. The technology highlights include high selectivity, reduced processing times, minimized environmental impact, and reduced costs associated with processing pipelines. MRT also allows for the targeted recovery of specific metals early in the process and permits the recycling of process solutions, ensuring sustainable operations.
Extraction of Platinum Group Metals (PGM) from spent Catalytic Converters with MRT™
Catalytic converter recycling companies, including Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo K.K., use MRT™ to recover platinum group metals (PGMs) from used catalytic converters as follows. After pyrometallurgical processing of the catalytic converter scrap, the precious metals are dissolved in an acidic leach solution. This leach solution is then passed through MRT™ columns filled with IBC’s proprietary SuperLig® resins which are highly selective for specific PGMs. The desired PGMs are recovered at 99+% levels and 99.95-99.99% purities after a single pass.
Advantages of Using MRT™ for Recycling Platinum, Rhodium and Palladium from Used Catalytic Converters:
- Highly selective single-pass recoveries of 99%+
- Product purities of 99.95 - 99.99%
- Dramatic reduction of PGMs in the processing pipeline, reducing metal financing costs and releasing metal earlier for sale
- Option to target specific, commercially important PGMs such as rhodium and palladium early in the flowsheet
- High loading and elution flow rates, online processing and efficient production
- Simple flowsheets that conserve equipment, chemicals, labor, space and time with recycling of process solutions and minimal waste
- Minimization of health, safety, security, and environmental risks by using a closed system and avoiding harsh chemicals and solvents
- Treatment of both dilute and concentrated feed streams
- Multi-cycle use of SuperLig® resins
