Produced water management for the oil and gas industry - Oil, Gas & Refineries

A combination of factors in recent years has led to increased attention to water management in the oil and gas industry. Some of these factors include: limited water resources in certain areas, development of water-intensive technologies to better exploit unconventional plays, excessive transportation/disposal costs for water, a changing regulatory environment and a public push for sustainability and conservation relating to water as a resource.

The industry is taking a renewed approach to tackling its water management challenges. One of these challenges in particular is the fact that produced and flowback water streams must often be treated prior to disposal, reinjection, or reuse. The capital and operating costs associated with most treatment systems can be very high. The need for economical management of produced and flowback water is critical.

Pentair Porous Media provides high performance filtration and separation systems for produced and flowback water streams that will lower operating and capital costs and add value to your business. We also offer a broad array of secondary water treatment technologies that allow the re-use of produced water streams for beneficial uses such as agricultural irrigation, boiler feed water, etc.

Some of the issues our customers are facing:

  • Plugging of disposal wells and producing formations by solid particles and suspended oil droplets
  • Plugging of lines, valves, and orifices due to deposition of inorganic scales
  • Exceeding discharged oil concentrations
  • Growth of bacteria that plug lines and valves or result in the formation of harmful products

How do you attain better management of produced water while lowering your costs?
This technology provides petroleum producers, gas processors, and service providers with dramatically improved solids control and hydrocarbon recovery from produced water streams. It eliminates the need for expensive excess processing or storage tank capacity. Additionally, recovery of valuable hydrocarbons results in a solution that is economical as well as effective.

Conventional filtration methods such as walnut shell filters, cartridges, or induced gas/dissolved air flotation (IGF or DAF) are limited to applications with less than 200-300 ppm oil and under the best of circumstances are typically 90% - 95% effective. These methods traditionally have a large footprint and are unable to handle variable process conditions.

HRT technology allows free hydrocarbon levels be reduced from as high as 5% by volume to just a few ppm at the outlet, representing removal efficiencies greater than 99.8%. HRT is has a compact footprint and is a solution which is scalable to any process conditions. Unlike conventional methods, this robust system, once in place, will handle your continuously changing process conditions and help you meet your produced water challenges.
