Seismic borehole and surface solutions for seismic tomography - Environmental - Environmental Monitoring
Wind power plants: Wind turbines requires a stable foundation to derive dynamic force into an intact ground. e integrity of the subsurface needs to be inspected prior the design. Underground cavities or tunnels of man-made or natural origin may lead to undesired subsidence or foundation failures.
Investigations only from surface suffer from low resolution. Seismic borehole tomography is one of the methods to nd small scale structures relevant for structural foundation design. It is recommended to drill several boreholes right at the footprint of the foundation a few meters below the estimated cavity depth and to start the high-resolution imaging.
Sinkholes are known to happen suddenly. The collapse of a man-made tunnel or natural cavity may lead to fatal damages to buildings or other critical infrastructure. If the sinkhole occurs below or right next to buildings the knowledge of the sinkhole is crucial for the stability of the building and safety of the people.
A detailed investigation of the geological situation is needed to find the cause of the sinkhole and its dimensions. Drillings are allowed only outside the sinkhole area. Thus, seismic tomography between boreholes is a valuable method to map the extend of the sinkhole.
