CPI Installs CatOx at Candy Manufacturer
Coating edible products such as candy often utilizes a dip bath process in which the edible product is coated with an alcohol-based confectioner’s glaze. During the application and drying of this alcohol-based glaze significant emissions of VOCs are released into the environment.
The new VECTOR 2,000 SCFM Catalytic Oxidizer (CatOx) will control the VOC emissions from the application of an alcohol-based confectioners glaze from an extrusion line, dip bath and flashoff area. The CatOx will destroy VOC emissions from the process with 98% destruction efficiency (DRE).
Catalytic treatment of VOCs and other air pollutants works by reacting the harmful air pollutants over a specially designed catalyst where VOCs are converted to CO2, water vapor (H2O), and usable heat. These harmless byproducts are passed through a heat exchanger where the gas streams energy is transferred to the incoming exhaust.
The CPI Catalytic Oxidizer utilizes a high velocity mixing chamber at the burner, which forces flame impingement and turbulence to occur, providing excellent mixing of the air stream. By designing for the highest mixing, the CPI CatOx system can deliver the highest temperature uniformity before the catalyst bed and ensure that 100% of the catalyst is efficiently oxidizing the VOCs.
A key component of the overall system design was the inclusion of a VOC capture system directly integrated with the manufacturing process. CPI provided engineering services, drawings, and support for the complete design and installation of the permanent total enclosure (PTE) and interior ductwork. CPI worked closely with the production personnel to design a Permanent Total Enclosure (PTE) to meet U.S EPA Method 204 criteria. The PTE and interior ducting were constructed with stainless steel, food grade materials. The PTE was designed with removable, cleanable sections which provide for line of sight inspection capability for operators during candy processing.
In addition, CPI provided a complete turnkey installation of the Catalytic Oxidizer including engineering, design, and rigging. Due to space constraints the CatOx was installed on a grade mounted platform on the opposite end of the building. The installation required extensive galvanized spiral rooftop ductwork to connect the process exhaust to the catalytic oxidizer.
