Catalytic Products International (CPI) recently completed the installation of a new 33,000 SCFM Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) at a Midwest USA aerosol can manufacturer for the abatement of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) generated during the metal decorating process.
CPI Installs RTO at Metal Decorator
As part of a facility expansion to increase production capacity, the customer installed a new can manufacturing and decorator line. The 33,000 SCFM TRITON-33.97 Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) will control VOC emissions from the new coating application line, spray drying oven and lithographic printing process at the aerosol can manufacturing facility. The RTO will destroy VOC emissions with 98% destruction rate efficiency allowing the facility to maintain compliance with Clean Air Act standards. The RTO will achieve a thermal efficiency of 97% allowing for minimal gas consumption and operating costs.
Thermal treatment of VOCs and other air pollutants works by a simple reaction of the harmful hydrocarbon-based air pollutants with oxygen and heat. In this environment, the VOCs are chemically oxidized to form harmless inert by-products like CO2, water vapor (H2O), and usable heat. These harmless by-products are released to the atmosphere or used within primary or secondary energy recovery techniques to further lower the operational cost.
The Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) system designed extra capacity in the regenerator (heat transfer bed) to allow thermal efficiencies up to 97%. RTOs operate by preheating the process air as it passes upward through the first ceramic heat exchange media. This pre-heated air then exits the heat exchange media and enters a combustion chamber where it is heated to the setpoint temperature and oxidization of the VOCs is completed at greater than 98% efficiency. The resultant hot, clean air stream is then passed downward through the second ceramic heat exchange media bed where it is cooled before being released to the atmosphere.
CPI supported the system integrator providing the new can making machinery, with a turnkey installation of the RTO, including engineering, design and supply of the RTO, process exhaust ductwork and a concrete pad. The installation of the RTO and related equipment included separation of the hot and cold exhaust streams leading to the RTO and an induced draft booster fan on the clean side of the RTO to minimize condensation formation. A baghouse was installed by the system integrator prior to the RTO to control particulate matter from the coating application exhaust.
