Drum Scrubbers (DS) - Pet Food Manufacturing Facility in Georgia, USA - Case Study
A large pet food manufacturer in North Georgia was searching for a long-term odor control solution for multiple areas at the facility, including the wastewater treatment area, lift stations, waste tanks, etc., where by-products are treated and removed from the plant.
Trying to be a good neighbor, they recognized odor removal was needed in various stages of the treatment process and at specific locations, which made capturing and preventing odors more of a challenge.
The processing of manufacturing pet food releases substantial amounts of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and elevated levels of organic material odors into the air that are very unpleasant. Because consumer demand for more nutritious pet food options continues to shape the future of the industry, the air purification at this facility had to take into consideration plant expansion and process relocation along with space and media replacement costs.
PureAir Filtration (PureAir) understood the challenge presented bythefacility and engineered and manufactured several Drum Scrubbers (DS), two Side Access Housing units (SAH12-604 with two media passes and SAH12-706 with three media passes), and one Vertical Bed Scrubber (VBS-10) to treat the elevated odor levels of H2S and organic materials. PureAir customized the scrubbers for individual processing stages to keep the equipment footprint as small as possible and the replacement media costs to a minimum. By mounting the drum scrubbers on skids, PureAir created the portable odor control solutions needed for future process relocations.
Since each process application requires different intervals for the replacement of Sulphasorb XL™ and/or CPS12 adsorbent media, PureAir collects samples of the media every two weeks, analyzes the media in the lab, and provides media life expectancy reports to the customer.
Depending on the process and inlet gas concentrations, media is replaced every three to four weeks or every 12-18 months. This relative high frequency of media testing and monitoring of replacement intervals is an extra step taken by the facility to prevent odor discharges from occurring.
Since implementing PureAir`s dry scrubbers and media, odors have been reduced to untraceable levels and there have been minimal odor complaints from the neighbors.
