How to Properly Dispose of Grease & Cooking Oil

Jan. 7, 2022

Most states have laws that restrict commercial kitchens from disposing various types of kitchen fats, grease, and cooking oil. At Aqua Zyme Disposal Systems Inc., we are your source for grease trap cleaning and pumping services.

In the majority of cases, individuals who cook at home do not have the option mentioned above. Although some municipal programs provide curbside pickup of oil, many areas do not and require residents to drop off any used collected oil at certain specified locations.

Reuse the Fat if Possible

Cooking delicious food usually involves the use of some kind of fat. This is true whether you are cooking chicken nuggets, fried eggs, or other fried foods that utilize cooking fat. This fat needs to be reused, repurposed, or thrown away in a proper manner.

Do Not Dump Grease and Cooking Oil Down the Drain

The important thing to understand before discussing this topic further is that under no circumstances should you empty your used grease or cooking oil down the drain. The fat is a liquid at room temperature, but it can still clog up your pipes and ruin your plumbing and the plumbing in your neighborhood. This can result in backed up sinks or even potentially basements that are flooded with sewage.

If You Must Toss It

If you absolutely cannot reuse the cooking oil or grease, or you simply do not want to handle it or store it, there are ways to remove it from the kitchen in the correct manner. You will need to choose a collection vessel, such as a plastic bottle, milk carton, or old coffee can. Dump the grease or oil in this container. Then, seal the container and throw it in the trash. Alternatively, you can check to see if your city has an oil recycling program with a designated drop-off location to deliver your leftover grease and cooking oil.
