Packed Bed System (PBS) - New Belgium Brewery, Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - Case Study
THE PROBLEM:
New Belgium Brewery, known most famously for Fat Tire Belgian Ale, began brewing craft beer in Fort Collins, Colorado in 1991. In 2016, a secondary location was opened in Asheville, North Carolina and began receiving complaints from plant workers and neighbors of smells from plant operation. The fermentation process of brewing beer produces extremely odorous airstreams, and as the brewery has continued to grow, the problem naturally has grown as well. New Belgium looked to industry leaders to assist in providing a reliable and long term solution for removing the odorous by-products.
THE SOLUTION:
The brewery turned to PureAir due to its extensive experience in processing food and beverage odors. PureAir Sales and Engineering team developed the following plan to tackle the odor at the plant:
- One PBS-504 unit to treat 1000 CFM of malodorous air
- Unit constructed of FRP
- FRP blower
- Mist and Grease Filter
- Sulphasorb XL™ and PureAir 12 media
- Exhaust stack
- Electronic Bed Monitor with NEMA control panel
Today, New Belgium is the fourth largest supplier of craft beer. Even with the growth in volume, the plant staff can rest assured that the odor will be controlled.
