San Diego formation groundwater development and storage potential.
Groundwater as a resource has been little utilized in San Diego County, California, compared to neighboring counties to the north. The San Diego formation in southwestern San Diego County is one resource that has seen limited utilization historically, but in recent years has been viewed with increasing interest by local agencies for expanded groundwater development. Potential uses include increased groundwater extraction with reverse osmosis treatment, as needed, or aquifer storage and recovery, using either imported or locally available raw or treated water. For the last 20 years approximately 2,000 acre?feet/year have been extracted from the San Diego formation from a well field located in National City. A 2,000 acre-foot/year extraction/aquifer storage recovery project will soon come on-line, utilizing a well field installed along the Sweetwater River. Other potential projects are in the planning stages.
