Biological Systems for Air Treatment
The biological operates by transferring polluted substances from air to water (absorption) where they are converted (oxidised) by bacteria into carbon dioxide, water and minerals salt. If it is compared with traditional systems of abatement (chemical scrubber, activated carbon, thermal oxidation) the biological process has a low environmental impact (no consumption of chemical’s, pollutant are really converted and biologically treated without build up on treatment media with very low energy consumption) and low operating costs due to simplicity of process.
Absorbers (Washing Towers)
Absorbers works by transferring polluted substance’s from a gas to a liquid. In most cases the gas is composed of a polluted air stream air and the absorber liquid is water with the addition of chemical reagents which oxidise the polluting substances. The use of this technology is as easiest on soluble polluting compounds which are easily oxidised. A typical application is the removal of inorganic chemical compounds such as hydrogen sulphide (compound responsible for bad odours in wastewater treatment plants) and ammonia (compound found in solid waste treatment plants).
Wet Dust Removal Systems
One of the most common process utilized to remove the dust from a gaseous flow is by washing with a water solution. The system mode of operation is the transfer of dust particles from air to water. To maintain treatment it is necessary to purge contaminated water from the process and replace with clean water. Technologies utilized differ depending on the requirement for contact between gas and liquid, or for stripping of compounds.
