Jul. 14-18, 2025 East Lansing

Each ABC Operator School event we offer is unique and distinct from the next. What makes this one special is that you’re in-person and in the field with real operators. MSU not only has excellent teachers that specialize in anaerobic digestion with top-notch teaching facilities, they own and operate a digester and they run a commercial lab that digester owners, operators and designers from all over the country use. Former students love our in-person Operator School it for its hands-on style, authenticity, and summer camp vibe.  Past classes have been known to bond quickly, host informal happy hours and ping pong tournaments to wind down, and even request evening pizza parties to get more time with the instructors.

On December 17 & 19, join us for an all new course: Digestate Treatment. Much like the course above, this session will include a detailed discussion of treatment for digestate including primary, secondary and tertiary methods, including a first-of-its-kind look at the applications of activated sludge and biological nutrient removal techniques in addition to UF/RO and evaporation methods. The group of industry experts who have designed, installed and operated these systems will be part of the first day’s panel. The second day will provide in-depth discussions with several technology providers who will provide process data and real results on the processes discussed. Designed for continuing education for facility operators, this is an excellent introduction to the plethora of treatment options available, and will provide a base understanding for anyone developing projects or providing support services to the industry.

Brought back by popular demand! On December 10 & 12, attend Substrate as Potential Energy to gain a rigorous understanding of the actual energy that can be extracted from various substrates, calculation methods and the real impacts of weathering, and pretreatment/ separation of the energy that can be extracted. In addition, we’ll dive into the physical and biological properties of substrates as a source of potential energy, covering critical topics like micronutrients, advanced separation, and concentration methods. The second day, attendees will hear an in-depth review from technology providers looking at real data to understand the effects of substrate processing. This session is essential learning for anyone looking at the real energy possible from a digestion system.
