About us
Our Background
Founded in 1922 by our current Chairman’s grandfather, the British Engines group has been delivering quality engineering services for almost 100 years.
The business was established initially to provide subcontract engineering services for the marine and shipping industries, setting up shop on the same site that we still operate on today next to the River Tyne. In the present day, British Engines has transformed into a complementary group of eight engineering companies, operating from sites across the world, utilising the network to create synergies in supply chain, procurement and engineering knowhow.
BEL Valves established itself as a serious player in 1964 when we began designing and manufacturing valves under licence for the petrochemical industry. During the development of the North Sea assets in the 1970’s, we quickly established ourselves as a key supplier to the oil and gas industry. Since then we’ve continued to be at the helm of a number of innovative firsts, maintaining our reputation as a critical valve supplier who has helped push the industry standards forward in safety, innovation and reliability.
Equally we know that to fully capitalise on your innovations you must continue to invest in the latest machine tools and software to execute each job with precision and efficiency. Equipped with the latest CNC lathes, vertical machining centres, horizontal boring mills, and grinding machines, we ensure the quality is maintained for every component from small, 3mm diameter to large 40 tonne work pieces. Offering this unique end to end suite of services from our headquarters, our site is also home to welding, paint, assembly, metallurgy and metrology laboratories and tungsten carbide coating facilities.

By expanding our manufacturing capabilities overseas we’ve been able to take advantage of an alternative cost model whilst continuing to deliver an exceptional level of quality. With a flexible manufacturing supply, we adapt more quickly and freely to our customers’ needs. By utilising the global British Engines network we can garner significant cost savings for commodity items, but with the same high quality we demand for our critical components.
