Soil contains diverse communities of microorganisms that perform numerous functions, allowing the soil to support plant growth and health by fixation of nutrients, fighting diseases, creating resistance to drought, expanding root reach, and decomposing organic material. Therefore, knowledge about the presence of specific microorganisms and their functional capacity is of great importance when working with soil. Different types of soil are characterized by their unique composition of microbes, and even within soil types, the composition differs depending on factors such as pH, water content, fertilization, and crop type. Characterizing and modifying the beneficial microbes found in soil and on plants presents a promising strategy to optimize plant growth and health, and greater knowledge of the diverse communities of microorganisms in the soil, therefore, paves way for creating more robust crops that can be produced more sustainably.

We help you precisely and accurately to identify the microbial composition of your sample. Using amplicon sequencing with ITS or 16s we can detect and classify the bacteria and fungi in samples like: Agriculture samples: plant, root, soil/dirt, water/aqua, bioreactor. Life science samples: gut, blood, spit, skin, fecal/stool/feces, biopsies. Targeted sequencing of a phylogenetic marker gene allows us to profile the taxonomic composition of a specific microbial kingdom, such as bacteria or fungi. In our amplicon sequencing services, we profile the bacterial microbiome by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene, and we profile the fungi microbiome by sequencing the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) sequence (the mycobiome).

Shotgun metagenomic sequencing provides a detailed picture of the composition of microorganisms in a sample. As opposed to amplicon-based methods like 16S rRNA sequencing, shotgun sequencing covers microorganisms from different kingdoms of life and increases the resolution by providing information on strain level variation. In addition to providing detailed information on which organisms are found and their relative abundance, this sequencing solution also profiles the genetic content of the microorganisms thereby providing information on the functional potential of the microbiome in a sample. Simply put, it tells you both who is there and what they can do. By applying our data processing and biostatistical platform, we can evaluate if a certain test condition, such as a new food ingredient, affects the composition and function of the microbiome, and detect which specific genes and pathways are involved.
