BirdBuffer LLC is dedicated to helping birds find a safer location where they do not create a mess at their place of business. By using a concentrated form of grape juice (methyl anthranilate) in a vapor form, Bird Buffer has created a safe and humane, proven method of keeping birds away.
The patented BirdBuffer by Bird Buffer LLC., controls all kinds of birds in open air spaces, indoors and outdoors, with a fraction of the cost of other bird control methods, such as netting, spikes, gels, and traps. BirdBuffer machines convert the grape fluid into nano-particles, creating an invisible vapor that remains air-borne for up to 6 hours. Proven to work as a bird repellent, the vapor is just enough to stimulate birds to leave, yet is perfectly safe for people and animals. It doesn’t harm the birds either – just makes them go away.

Pigeons and other birds fly in large open spaces that are not easily controlled by people and businesses affected by the messy disease-infested droppings that accompanies them. Companies often spend hundreds and thousands of dollars on experimental methods that may or may not work, resulting in frustration, lost time, and inefficient use of maintenance budgets. Migratory birds in these open air spaces are especially difficult to control and prevent from returning to their previous known feeding, nesting, resting, or brooding grounds around these facilities…
…Until a new and innovative method was discovered and the BirdBuffer was invented …
When BirdBuffer Inventor & CEO Gary Crawford raised homing pigeons and raced them, he would take them 200 miles from their home and, invariably, they would beat him home to their cage. One year after closing the cages, they were still coming back. “They remembered their home location from 200 miles away and continued to test the area for moving back in. I learned then that birds have great memories,” Crawford explains.
How fitting that 40 years later, Crawford, owner of CITC, an award-winning special effects company, would use his knowledge of pigeons to build a machine for pigeon control in open spaces.” At CITC we have been manufacturing specialty machines to create haze, wind, smoke and other special effects for the entertainment industry since 1990″, says Crawford. “In fact, we have the largest selection of haze machines in the world.” CITC manufactures small particle haze machines for opera houses, basketball arenas, large sport arenas, movie sets, and anywhere that dry, even, long lasting haze is needed.
In November of 1994, a harmless grape food flavoring called methyl anthranilate (MA) was found to deter birds without harming them by stimulating the trigeminal nerve found only in birds. (Registered by the EPA and the FDA, it was employed in crop sprayers for spraying fruits.
Applying his knowledge of birds and pigeons to his special effects experience and expertise with haze, fog, and air currents Crawford developed the technology and the company which bears its name – Bird Buffer LLC. The BirdBuffer is a smaller particle machine which uses the previously mentioned methyl anthranilate (MA) to create the invisible haze/vapor that encourages birds to fly to new roosting areas without harming them. Using powerful wind technology, the nano-particles from the BirdBuffer stay suspended in the vaporized air for up to 6 hours thereby creating effective bird control in large areas for long distances.
“We used to wonder why the birds didn’t leave until they started flying through the vapor particles floating in the air. Then we realized it was their faster breathing during flying that stimulated the birds causing them to leave.” Crawford said. “So we incorporated timed automation for short output duration during their flying times and not when they sleep.” Being familiar with the habits of pigeons, he understood how to get the best response from them. Vaporizing the fluid in timed release keeps it fresh throughout the day and reduces the amount of fluid consumption, resulting in the best response from the birds and ultimately saving the cost of clean-up and maintenance.
The tiny size of the vapor created by BirdBuffer ensures the scent of grapes is mild and pleasant. When used indoors, the vapor is just enough to stimulate birds to leave, yet not bother people, animals, workers in the facility or even the birds. It just makes them go away. The patented BirdBuffer system is the original flying-bird-deterrent in the world. It is proven to work and is extremely cost-effective. Because it is automated with a timer, it is easier to install than most other types of bird control and labor is minimized. BirdBuffers only use an average of one gallon monthly to gain bird control up to a 5 acre area. That’s quite a savings of money and time. When you want “Invisible Protection with Visible Results” for your business.
The Bird Buffer Q3 shown above is simply placed on the roof over the area where birds fly. Alternatively, it can be mounted to a wall bracket, or suspended under eaves on sturdy cables, but of which are available options. The Bird Buffer is operated by an electronically controlled vaporizer/blower to spread the vapor over larger areas.
The digital 24 hour timer allows you to turn the unit completely off at night, when the vapor is ineffective. At customer-selected intervals, a cycle timer releases fresh vapor into the air in the bird-control area. Customers like the aroma of the vapor, as it adds a slightly sweet scent. There have been times we have been requested to turn the output up so the people can smell it even when the birds have left. It’s just that pleasant!
No spray, residue or thick fog is emitted with the clean, invisible output of the Bird Buffer Q3. It is self contained, easy to maintain and stays warm in winter months for those cold days. The latest model is easy to operate, easy to fill, and lockable for security.
Bird Buffer® Q3 works to control pigeons and other flying birds with tested and approved bird repellant, MA (Methyl Anthranilate) . MA is a concentrated grape juice concentrate and flavoring used in many food products including bubble gum and is USFDA approved (United States Food and Drug Administration).
The built-in blower pushes the MA vapor away from the mouth of the unit at around 60 mph. This spreads the vapor for even bird control, and makes it possible to cover large areas with a single machine.
It is very important that the vapor is released where the birds are flying and not where they have landed, as it affects the birds only when they fly. The tiny particles of vapor (less than 10 microns) enter the birds breathing system. It becomes an irritant and the birds fly away. If the birds try to return, they once again breathe the irritant and fly away. Birds soon remember the irritant in the area…and stay away.
Usually two weeks are sufficient for starting bird control in smaller areas and to deter other established flocks from the treated area. During your bird control progress, “scouts” will try to return, requiring the subsequent operation of running the vapor each day, enough to continuously deter the flying birds from returning. After bird control is established, it is possible to turn down the timer for less consumption while still deterring birds from returning. At this point the Bird Buffer® Q3 requires very little fluid; two ounces per day are generally enough if the wind is favorable.
Unlimited cycle-timer capabilities
The 24 hour timer can be set for up to 8 off/on periods, allowing you to operate the BirdBuffer Q3 only at periods of bird activity. During “On” periods, a cycle-timer turns on the blower to push out any residual vapor that is inside the unit, and then activates the compressor to create more vapor. The cycle timer can be adjusted to run for longer periods for problem areas, and after you have achieved success you may want to reduce the settings to create just enough vapor to keep the birds from coming back, while conserving fluid and power. The cycling of the compressor that makes the vapor will stay on the settings you provide, while the blower is constant, giving more coverage.
Why is automation of the machine important?
In our studies, we have found that the automation is extremely important to good bird control. By offering a timer that turns the vapor-producing compressor on and off at regular intervals, we have found:
- The vapor spreads better and stays drier without residue.
- It keeps the vapor from being too thick. Being invisible is key to our program.
- It provides less consumption of product at the right times. The one gallon per month can only work with automation.
- It pulses the particles further without over-saturating the air with too much product. Too much vapor is as bad as too little. Proper settings are key to best results.
For open outdoor areas
Over time, the Bird Buffer will cover a one acre area when strategically placed with the wind assisting (downwind position) or a wind machine. To check wind direction and best placement, use the Windicator Can of spray smoke to determine coverage and be able to “see” the air movement and direction. Start with a 200’ x 200’ space in the highest area of bird control needs. Allow the bird control to increase and spread outward over several weeks. You will see fewer birds each week as time progresses.
If you are in a closed environment with employees or public and the vapor becomes too strong, it is easy to turn down the volume. The vapor should release a soft, sweet scent that is pleasant for people, but causes the birds to just go away. Never have the unit turned up so high that the scent becomes overwhelming.
Best time to achieve bird control
The best results are achieved if the vapor is applied when birds are the most active, such as the early morning and in the evening, just before settling down for the night. Adjust the clock timer to turn the unit on just before dawn (adjust for Daylight Saving Time) when birds are flying to look for their preferred feeding grounds, and late afternoon till 30 minutes past dark, when they fly to locations to roost for the night. It is important to expose the birds early enough that they have time to find another location before dark. This is a training process that takes a few weeks. Most bird control is achieved during the day; do not run the machine at night unless there are lights causing activity or you are dealing with nocturnal birds.
