Problem solving. That was the driving force in the creation of Bolttech Mannings, and it remains at the heart of who we are today.

In 1979, Harry J. Knopp began pursuing his vision when he founded Bolttech and forged a path for the industry by pioneering industrial bolting services. These services looked at the various requirements in key industries and set out to solve problems and develop solutions in the power generation, petrochemical, steel, and natural gas transmission industries. From the original headquarters in West Newton, Pennsylvania, the company began steady, consistent, strategic growth. To serve the large concentration of refineries and petrochemical plants in Louisiana, Bolttech’s second office opened in Baton Rouge in 1981. By 1991, the company was designing and manufacturing hydraulic torque and stud tensioning systems. During this time, the tools the company developed were used in the company’s own service fleet. By 1997, Bolttech was the first fully integrated bolting company that engineered, designed, and manufactured hydraulic and pneumatic torquing and tensioning systems. Success in those lines brought new offices in Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Toledo, and Shanghai. Also during those years, the company introduced Induction Bolt Heating, which led to tremendous corporate growth.

A decade after Bolttech’s creation, Mannings USA was founded by Peter Smith in Morristown, New Jersey, on the same problem-solving foundation. In 1995, Mannings shortened maintenance for power plants by pioneering and revolutionizing Induction Bolt Heating. Their solutions transformed downtime from days to hours, saving labor time and equipment wear. By 1992, they had developed a machine to dry out motors and stators. Mannings’ solutions also helped pioneer a process that allowed rotors to be kept in a horizontal position and rotating during welding. In 1999, working with the TVA, the company offered one device to complete the whole process, again saving labor hours and avoiding motor burnout through the control of temperature throughout the process. Mannings posted other milestones as well. Between 1989 and 1995, they developed a method to heat treat turbine rotors in their natural position, provided thermal expansion services for the retaining ring changeout utilizing induction heating, performed de-stack and re-stacking of turbine rotor wheels, and developed and patented a method to rapidly heat turbine bolting utilizing induction heating. By 1995, their office network had grown to include Dover, Mobile, Chicago, Ohio, and California. Company growth continued as OEMs requested that they move to the bolting side of the business.

As each company continued to grow, an interesting thing happened. Manning was experiencing growth toward the bolting side of the business while Bolttech was seeing their business grow toward the heating side. So it just made sense for these two industry leaders to join forces. The result was one-stop solutions while adding strength to strength.

Today, Bolttech Mannings professionals maintain the original commitment to creating innovative solutions, developing superior products, and providing exceptional service to customers in all industries.
