Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems
DEWATS stands for “Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems”. DEWATS represents a technical approach rather than merely a technology package. DEWATS applications are designed to be low-maintenance: most important parts of the system work without technical energy inputs and cannot be switched off intentionally. DEWATS applications provide state-of-the-art technology at affordable prices because all of the materials used for construction are locally available.
Community-Based Sanitation
Official statistics suggest that about 2.6 billion people do not have access to “improved” sanitation. 75% of these people live in Asia, 18% live in Africa and 5% live in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Community-Based Sanitation framework, or CBS, is tailored to improve sanitation conditions in densely populated urban areas. Project implementations depend on the active cooperation of communities, governments, NGOs, and the private sector. Implementation of proven technical options is synthesized with capacity building measures and technical expertise to render CBS an attractive option in areas where neither individual on-site nor centralized sewerage systems can fulfill the need of stakeholders for basic sanitation.
Decentralized Solid Waste Management
Due to continuous high population growth and rapid economic development in urban areas, many public, private and informal sector service providers in cities in developing countries are unable to cope with increasing volumes of solid waste, especially in poor and low-income areas. Regular and safe disposal of solid waste is the basis for hygiene and prevention of diseases and hence the foundation for any development activities oriented at poverty alleviation through improvement of health.
Decentralized Water Supply
Access to clean water constitutes the basis for a minimum standard of living and enables the deprived to improve their quality of life. Water supply for household and agricultural use is thus a key component of poverty-oriented Basic Needs Services. The willingness of the target group to actively participate in the project realisation is essential for the sustainability of any action and is a precondition for project implementation. BORDA incorporates only environmentally friendly technologies and the renewable energy sources into the technology selection process.
