Boskalis Environmental is a global leader in the field of large-scale washing of soil and dredged sediment, as well as in extensive land and riverbed remediation. Our highly specialized techniques have been developed in-house and our plant and equipment are unique, built by us to meet the client’s needs.
With our management support office, engineering department and laboratory, we are able to execute multifaceted projects in their entirety – from the initial tests, design and project management right through to the construction of the required plants and the implementation and management of the project. The sooner a client involves us in a project, the more accurately we are able to respond to the client’s often complex issues.
Boskalis Environmental has two home markets: one based in the Netherlands and working in Europe under the name Boskalis Dolman b.v. and the second in North America operating under the name Stuyvesant Environmental Contracting LLC & Stuyvesant Projects Realization Inc.
Boskalis Environmental employs over 100 people worldwide and uses the corporate support services of the Royal Boskalis Westminster nv, an international maritime service provider whose activities include dredging. Boskalis Environmental provides essential services to clients confronted with difficult remediation projects involving contaminated sediments and in this way complements the activities of our parent company.
Dolman bv was established by Johan Dolman in the late 1970s. In the early days the company was primarily engaged in the mining and transportation of sand for sand extraction projects at sites in the Netherlands including the IJssel Lake, Gooi Lake and Wadden Sea. At the same time, environmental awareness and the search for sustainable solutions was growing worldwide. With extraordinary vision, Johan Dolman was able to connect the processes for sand extraction with the demand for techniques to treat contaminated soils.
Following his vision, in the mid-1980s Dolman moved into riverbed remediation and pioneered the development of innovative separation and dewatering techniques. The application of these techniques became renowned when Dolman became the first company to tackle the large-scale processing of contaminated dredged sediment from Amsterdam’s canals.
Following the acquisition of Dolman bv by Royal Boskalis Westminster nv in the early 1990s, soil washing was added to the company’s expertise and a network of sites for processing contaminated soil at competitive prices was established in the Netherlands. Over 500,000 tons of contaminated soil are processed each year at these sites. Increasingly, Boskalis Environmental’s Dolman emphasis is on the recovery and re-use of secondary raw materials resulting from these soil processing operations.
After the turn of the millennium our focus shifted to developing mobile soil washing plants (MSWP) for deployment on projects outside the Netherlands. These plants were first used on a project in Devonport in the United Kingdom. Building on our success in the UK, we turned to the United States. Under the name Stuyvesant Environmental Contracting LLC and Stuyvesant Projects Realization Inc., mobile plants were used on large-scale sediment remediation projects at the Miami River in Florida, at Waterfront Toronto and the Lower Passaic River in New Jersey. At the Fox River in Wisconsin a permanent, fixed-base processing plant was built.
Given the growth of Boskalis Dolman, Stuyvesant Environmental Contracting LLC and Stuyvesant Projects Realization Inc activities in Europe and in North America respectively, a strategic decision was made in 2012 to bring these three organizations under one new label: Boskalis Environmental. The name makes clear the relationship to our parent company, Boskalis, and our core business, environmentally sound and sustainable solutions.
What led to the rapid development of our remediation techniques and equipment? A dedication to the principles of sustainability. Washing contaminated soil contributes to a cleaner environment and a more sustainable society. Large-scale infrastructure projects are complex and often pose risks to the environment and raise concerns among stakeholders. Boskalis Environmental specifically tackles these issues by working with the utmost care and complying with international, national and regional legislation and regulations relating to environmental risks. Our environmental performance is constantly monitored and improved and our environmental management system is certified (ISO 14001:2004).
In addition quality is always a priority and we use a certified quality management system (ISO 9001:2008) and hold a number of process and product certificates, specific to our activities:
- BRL7500, protocol 7510 and 7511 (processing contaminated soil and dredged sediment);
- BRL9335, protocol 9335-1 (individual batches of soil);
- BRL7000 and 7003 (executing land and riverbed remediation work);
- BRL2000, protocol 2001 and 2002 (execution of fieldwork for environmental soil investigation).
Above all, the well-being of our employees is of the utmost concern. The corporate-wide safety program NINA (No Injuries, No Accidents) initiated by our parent company Royal Boskalis Westminster nv has been thoroughly integrated into Boskalis Environmental. NINA is based on five values and five rules and backed up by training courses and workshops to ensure that all staff from management to operators are aware of these values and rules. Boskalis Environmental has been awarded OHSAS 18001:2007, the international health and safety standard. Our safety system is certified under VCA**2008/05.
