Boston Metal is pioneering a transformative approach to steel production through its Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE) technology, which utilizes electrochemistry to convert iron ore into high-quality molten metal. By using clean, renewable electricity instead of coal, this method enables direct conversion of various iron ore grades into pure liquid metal without any carbon dioxide emissions. The MOE process functions by immersing an inert anode in an electrolyte containing iron ore, electrifying it to split the iron oxide bonds and release oxygen gas. The process negates the need for hydrogen infrastructure and carbon capture, eliminating complex multi-step methods traditionally used in steelmaking. The methodology involves producing liquid iron and ferroalloys with modular, scalable MOE cells, effectively replacing traditional carbon-intensive steps like coke production and blast furnace reduction.
