Our History
The Briggs Group is a family run and owned business with more than 40 years in the marine industry. We are headquartered in Burntisland, Fife and have operations throughout the UK, the Caspian region, the Middle East, West Africa and South America.
Briggs initially became involved in the marine industry on the Firth of Forth in the 1970s, providing tough, dependable workboats to assist marine based construction works both on the east and west coasts of Scotland. Today we operate over 40 vessels working around North West Europe. We continue to invest heavily in the fleet and plant, which today includes survey vessels, crane barges, cable maintenance vessels, anchor handling vessels, dive support vessels, multicats, tugs and cranes. Other opportunities presented themselves over the years, and by the early 1980s we were providing vessels and manpower for Oil and Gas Terminal Operations.
By the late 1980s, we saw an opportunity in the environmental services market and by 1987 had purchased an oil spill response vessel, and established Briggs Environmental Services. We were part of the oil spill response for the Piper Alpha disaster in 1988 and the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska in 1989. Now a major player in worldwide oil spill response, we were part of the team called out to the Deep Water Horizon Macondo blow out in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. Briggs operates in various countries around the world delivering a full suite of environmental solutions including Consultancy, Training and Planning as well as Tier 1, 2 and 3 Spill Response Services. We also specialise in vessel salvage including oil recovery from sunken wrecks.
Since 2000 the Briggs Group has expanded its services further into submarine cable repair and installation, SPM repair and maintenance and also heavy mooring and Aids to Navigation refurbishment. 2014 saw the launch of our own in-house diving division with an aim to offer our clients the safest and most cost effective dive solutions in the UK.
Additionally we hold long-term contracts to manage the Woolwich Free Ferry for Transport for London, The Environment Agency’s survey fleet and are responsible for all of the Ministry of Defences moorings and navigation marks around the UK.
Briggs Marine & Environmental Services is well recognised as a trusted supplier and service provider; our dependable reputation is one that has taken decades to build.
