Brown Environmental Services Corporation services
Earthmoving Services
Brown Environmental offers the full compliment of earth moving equipment including excavators, loaders, dozers, articulated dumps, scarifiers, graders, screens, crushers, rollers, etc. Brown Environmental can provide either Union or Non-Union operators depending upon client specification. Ancillary services include excavation dewatering, filtration, settlement basin construction, drainage measures, stabilization measures, etc.
Soil Remediation
Bioremediation Services
Bioremediation is the process where organic contaminants are degraded by the metabolic action of aerobic, microaerophilic, anaerobic microorganisms and fungi. Biodegradation of organic compounds is a natural process where microorganisms gain energy and cell mass through the usage of organic carbon. The organisms are “obligatorily mutualistic” or, in other words, are producing by products that other strains will utilize in their catabolic reactions. Natural degradation rates are hampered by the limited supply of oxygen and nutrients in the subsurface and the presence of other non-degrading organisms which compete for the limited resources.
Stabilization, Solidification and Chemical Fixation Services
Stabilization and solidification were some of the earliest techniques used to treat soils and sludges impacted with metals and/or non-volatile organics. The techniques consist of mixing an amendment with soil or sludge to reduce the liquid content thereby encapsulating the contaminant within the solid matrix of the end product. However, certain metals do not remain within the encapsulated matrix with the typical stabilization and solidification amendments. Chemical fixation of problematic metals can be achieved with specialty reagents to keep them from leaching in the future.
Soil Vapor Extraction, Bioventing and Biosparing Services
In Soil vapor extraction (SVE), a vacuum is applied to the soil to induce the controlled flow of air to remove volatile and some semivolatile organic contaminants from the soil. Bioventing is similar to SVE in that a vacuum is applied to induce air flow, but the goal of bioventing is to provide oxygen to support indigenous microbial degradation. Biosparging typically involves the injection of air, oxygen, ozone or methane to encourage increased biodegradation. Biosparging is frequently coupled with SVE in order to control volatilized contaminant vapors.
Transportation and Disposal Services
Brown Environmental provides transportation and disposal services for residual solid and liquid waste, hazardous solid and liquid waste, construction demolition materials, and drum services. Brown Environmental has direct relationships with landfills, recycling facilities, beneficial reuse facilities, waste treatment plants, fuel blending operations, and cement kiln operations.
Groundwater Remediation
Chemical Oxidation Services
Groundwater chemical oxidation involves the delivery of amendment materials to the subsurface environment to transform contaminants into less harmful chemical species. There are several different forms of oxidants, posessing widely varying properties. For instance, some amendments react instantly while others persist for long periods. Oxidant persistance is important since this affects the contact time for advective and diffusive transport and ultimately the delivery of the oxidant to the targeted zones. Care must be taken to ensure that the mobilization of certain metals does not occur due to the oxidation treatment. Treatability studies are completed prior to full-scale treatment to ascertain soil oxidant demand, oxidant efficacy on the contaminants of concern, metals speciation, and injectate concentrations.
Automated Treatment Systems
Most remedial projects do not require the full life-cycle of automated treatment systems (ATSs). Therefore, despite their remedial efficiency, the capital costs are prohibitive considering their fractional life-cycle usage and limited residual market value post-remediation. As such, Brown Environmental fabricates and leases these systems to clients thereby reducing client capital expenditures, eliminating disposition time and costs, and reducing corporate taxes. Common ATSs include: groundwater recovery/treat/amend/reinjection systems, bioslurp systems, dual phase extraction systems, bioventing systems, and SVE/sparging systems.
Research & Development
Treatability and Pilot Studies Services
Brown Environmental utilizes our dedicated laboratory to evaluate biological, chemical, and physical treatment methods for soils, sludges and liquids. These evaluations generate the site-specific data necessary to design effective, full-scale treatment systems, optimize treatment regimens and predict remedial end points. Brown Environmental focusses on evaluating both our proprietary products and the commercially available amendment products to characterize their ability to treat hazardous materials. Brown Environmental evaluates up to 80 amendment products per year and maintains a database of product quality and effictiveness.
