Capula delivers transformative systems integration technologies and advances digital connectivity to optimise our clients’ operations and create business advantage.  Our independent philosophy means we offer insightful perspectives, gained from our broad knowledge of technologies from leading manufacturers in the automation arena.

Our dynamic workforce live and breathe technology and apply lateral, creative techniques to swiftly resolve complex project challenges, with a focus on building robust client-partner relationships.

We leverage our extensive industry experience by delivering transformative systems, software and service solutions to the markets we serve, namely the water, power distribution, power generation and transmission, energy distribution, oil and gas, nuclear, renewables and chemical sectors.

We are part of Imtech, a large, independently owned and managed technical services provider who deliver for clients across the UK and Ireland, specialising in mechanical and electrical engineering and technical facilities management.

Capula's history traces back more than forty years, during which time the company has existed in a number of guises.

Starting life as Instem, the company provided programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to clients before trends in water automation in the 1980s saw an expansion into panel build and control systems. The '90s brought with it a number of landmark power station control system refit & refurbishment projects and an increase in the use of automation in nuclear waste storage.

The turn of the century saw our markets starting to see the value of real-time business intelligence, and how it can optimise plant performance while also delivering cost savings and helping to achieve environmental compliance. In addition, we began seeing value in the provision of 24x7 support contracts with key clients, notably National Grid and Drax Power, while site-wide automation, data analysis & reporting saw growth in the oil & gas markets.

A management buy-out with the support of private equity provider Dunedin in 2006 saw rapid growth for Capula across all our markets, with records in new contracts won being broken as the company doubled in size between 2009 and 2012. This led to Capula being acquired by Imtech in June 2012, and we are now able to draw on the electrical, mechanical and ICT capabilities of this global technical services provider.

Capula has enjoyed a period of sustained growth for several years. Despite an extremely challenging economic climate in the UK, the company has doubled in both turnover and staff since 2009.

2010 heralded the best year in Capula’s history, with notable successes in the Utilities sector of our business providing a significant percentage of £42 million in new contracts won. Growth was also solid across our other markets – particularly nuclear, renewable power and oil & gas.

The following year saw this success continue with a number of leading-edge initiatives. We played an integral role in the first large-scale implementation of next generation emissions control for coal generation in the UK, large-scale biomass co-firing generation, and were at the forefront of one of the first UK Smart Grid projects under the Low Carbon Network Fund.

Alongside this, Capula continues to win large orders and has launched a recruitment drive to scale up our delivery capacity on nuclear projects. Our Nuclear Services division has been given its own identity – Capula Nuclear – and a dedicated, secure facility has been acquired in Stone, Staffordshire to cater for an anticipated increase in contracts being won. As part of this process, was also launched to increase brand visibility.

2012 saw us capitalise on this positioning while our capabilities in utilities, power and renewables has given Capula a healthy distribution of projects across our core markets. In June, Capula was acquired by Imtech Technical Services (, and is now able to draw on the electrical, mechanical and ICT capabilities of this global technical services provider.

More recently Capula has enjoyed success across all of our markets, including a branch into rail, while we've opened another dedicated office - this time for large-scale water projects - in Stafford.

Capula's core expertise is a pragmatic combination of industry & technology skills and experience in the energy and utilities markets, delivering major capital projects, incremental change and long-term support services for the control and monitoring of plant.

Our clients trust in our capabilities for delivery and support with our solutions ranging from cubicles for drives and marshalling through to control systems (PLC, DCS, SCADA), instrumentation and advanced IT.

Our clients recognise the link between plant operations and enterprise performance (ie. how their operational activities relate to customer service, financial success and brand image).

Capula's niche capability and expertise is in bridging between business and operations to drive value through activities like smart asset management.  This focuses on asset performance, critical asset health, environmental factors, health & safety and is underpinned by data resilience and security.

In this way, our clients can have confidence that Capula is providing advanced IT solutions powered by proven engineering skills and experience.
