The Performance Products Group: Church & Dwight History

Church & Dwight is one of America's oldest, best recognized companies, founded in 1846 by Dr. Austin Church of Connecticut, and his brother-in-law, John Dwight of Massachusetts. Together, they went into the production and marketing of Baking Soda, a trade name for bicarbonate of soda.

The company's first factory was Dr. Dwight's kitchen in Rochester, NY, and the first headquarters comprised a modest frame office over a New York City grocery store.  While Dr. Church handled production, Mr. Dwight aggressively marketed their product to City grocers. Their combined efforts planted the seeds of a product and brand that is now a staple in homes across America.

In 1867, James A. Church joined his father as a member of Church & Co. James   adapted the famous ARM & HAMMER trademark - the arm of Vulcan, Roman mythological god of fire, with hammer in hand. Since then, this trademark has become one of the world's most recognized logos - a symbol of the company's tradition of integrity and quality.

Time passed. The company grew and changed; branched out and came back together. By 1896, the descendants of the founders consolidated their interests under the name of Church & Dwight Co., Inc.

During the company's first 80 years, sodium bicarbonate was used and marketed almost exclusively as a household product. However, for the past 65 years, ARM & HAMMER brand has continued to stay ahead of trends. In 1967 Church & Dwight built its sodium bicarbonate plant in Green River, Wyoming, to take advantage of the natural soda ash reserves in the area. In 1968, the company purchased 'Tidy House,' a small laundry products company that was producing eco-friendly non-phosphate laundry detergent.

Since then, the company has continued to research and develop new bicarbonate product uses and formulations, opening exciting new markets that transcend the kitchen, including personal hygiene, pharmaceuticals and industrial applications.

Church & Dwight's journey has been a long and successful one. We believe our commitment to quality, purity, integrity and performance will continue to distinguish our culture and products well into the future!

The Performance Products Group: ARM & HAMMERand the Specialty Products Division

In 1970, Church & Dwight was divided into two product groups: The ARM & HAMMER Division and the Specialty Chemicals Division, now known as the Specialty Products Division. This separation allowed the ARM & HAMMER Division to focus on expanding consumer product offerings, while the Specialty Products Division worked on developing new industrial products.

The fortuitous split and subsequent growth led to the addition of a second plant in Old Fort, Ohio, in 1980, and positioned Church & Dwight as the largest sodium bicarbonate producer in the world.

The success of the Specialty Products Division has resulted in a vast expansion of applications and new markets for bicarbonates. For example, we have developed a major business from the benefits of sodium bicarbonate as a buffer in dairy rations – representing  the single largest use of sodium bicarbonate today. Additional new businesses are currently being spun off to focus on industrial precision blasting and aqueous cleaning.

The Performance Products Group stands at the heart of the Specialty Products Division, managing sales and marketing in eighteen major market segments. In addition to maintaining the growth of the Division's base business, the Performance Products Group  helps ensure the future of the company through continuous innovation and development of new ARM & HAMMER  brand technologies, products and services.
