The importance of a strategic approach to planning and managing the network is greater than ever. We have the techniques to make informed decisions by running different scenarios that challenge traditional cost basis and consider aspects such as whole life costing and lifecycle replacement. Our asset management approach is founded on our experience from the Portsmouth PFI contract, complemented by our bespoke asset management techniques and our investment in research and innovative products.  The unique combination of these in-house capabilities promotes a more proactive management of network maintenance based on informed treatment decisions and `intelligence led` maintenance.

We provide a full contracting service for surface treatments and conventional surfacing solutions. We are experienced in applying all classes of surfacing materials to clients` specifications. Working with both public and private sector clients, we have developed a portfolio of expertise, working on all classes of roads, delivering high durable and high quality surfacing. Colas` surfacing teams operate throughout the UK providing a range of surfacing options including the more traditional surfacing treatments of Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) and Hot Rolled Asphalt (HRA) as well as some of our more specialist surfacing treatments. Our experienced and dedicated teams utilise specialist equipment and an in house laboratory, ensuring quality in materials and consistency of application is permanently achieved.

Our experience of operating winter maintenance services is founded on the various contracts we operate throughout the UK and takes into account a wide range of climatic domains from high level trans-Pennine routes to low level urban coastal regions. Through our MAC contracts we are responsible for ensuring the availability of 33% of the trunk road and motorway network. We also undertake the winter maintenance responsibilities for our maintenance contracts in Devon, and the Wirral.

Our approach to emergency responses is based on years of experience with term maintenance operations across the UK and we have developed specialist resources, systems and procedures to ensure that we provide the best possible service safely, effectively and efficiently. We work closely with the emergency services, our clients, the media and other organisations as necessary to maintain the safety, integrity and traffic movement within the agreed time. Our MAC contracts include many strategic roads and have operate Incident Support Units (ISUs) to work with the emergency services and the clients Traffic Officer Service in the clearance of any incident and the expeditious movement of traffic occurring on the network ranging from major road traffic collisions to minor incidents such as debris on the carriageway. The ISUs patrol the motorway and trunk road network 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
