Foundations and Earth Retention Services
D’Appolonia provides a wide range of design services related to foundations and earth retention structures. Projects where these types of services are provided frequently involve develop-ment of innovative designs using specialty construction techniques to provide cost-effective construction solutions in difficult terrain or in conditions where conventional solutions are unattractive. Our engineers are familiar with a wide variety of specialty construction techniques and routinely perform analyses and prepare designs for owners and specialty contractors. Many of these projects involve remediation of failed or failing slopes in extremely difficult soil and rock conditions. D’Appolonia’s experience related to transportation and infrastructure includes projects for highways, bridges, tunnels, soil and rock embankments and slopes, retaining walls, culverts, streambank stabilization, pavements and other related infrastructure features. Our staff has extensive experience with respect to application of geotechnical and structural engineering expertise to infrastructure projects. Our familiarity with current engineering technologies and agency requirements allows us to develop safe, cost-effective and constructible designs for new facilities, and to repair, rehabilitate or modify existing facilities. The second edition of the Engineering and Design Manual for Coal Refuse Disposal Facilities is available at this link on the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) web site. This new edition of the Manual was prepared by a team led by D`Appolonia. The project involved solicitation of broad industry review and comment at two stages of the manual development: initially through a survey of design methodology currently in practice and subsequently by providing access to draft sections on critical design issues that were not previously addressed in the original 1975 manual. D’Appolonia’s dam and waterway experience includes more than 200 projects related to earth and concrete-gravity dams utilized for water supply, hydroelectric power generation, cooling and drinking water supply, pumped storage, flood control, river navigation, irrigation, recreation, and tailings and sludge disposal. Our dam engineering work includes successfully completed projects in the United States and overseas. In the U.S. we have worked for private industry and federal, state and local governments on dam projects ranging from performing safety inspections to embankment and hydraulic structure design and related construction monitoring. We have designed earth embankment dams and related hydraulic structures, and we have provided services for rehabilitation of existing dams.Environmental Engineering/Compliance Monitoring Services
