DESMI A/S applications
For oil spill response in beach and shoreline environments DESMI offers a whole host of equipment to handle any eventuality.
The smaller sizes of Ro-Boom and Ro-Beach are unequalled in application and robustness while the range of lightweight Troilbooms can meet the lower cost expectations. In addition the famous Termite and Mini-Max weir skimmers are proven performers in recovery.
Recovery systems are also available in vacuum designs from the well-known Ro-Vac to the highly portable Ro-Vac Mini – the latter even with its own transfer pump system to divert the pollutant.
Although the Ro-Tank can also be used on land or the back of a trailer, the Troil range of open top tanks offer the perfect solution for storage of the recovered oil. These tanks are very lightweight and need no special tools to erect. The tanks offer a wide selection of capacities – indeed , the smaller units are ideal for decontamination duties.
DESMI has a full range of different pumps and matching equipment supporting the handing of bitumen products. Including unique features suited for today’s needs and new polymer based formulations, we have the solution.
For certain applications, we can offer proven sealing options, available is also a patented zero-leakage pump with a state of the art magnetic coupling. This pump offers a total protection against spillage and vapour, which may create environmental hazards. Electrical heating is an alternative to heating by liquid or steam.
Applications tend to fall into four categories: Production (refining), distribution (terminals), hot mix (paving mixtures), and roofing (filled asphalts). Refineries and terminals often use steel pumps, while hot mix asphalt plants use mainly cast iron pumps with heating jacketed, and either packing or mechanical seals. Roofing plants are generally pumping highly abrasive, filled asphalts for shingle manufacturing.
Coloured and protected surfaces provide added value as paints and enamels help to make products both more interesting and increase their life. That is why they are important finishing materials where care, environmentally-friendliness and reliability are needed in their supply and correct dosage.
The DESMI ROTAN® gear pumps are commonly used for paints, resins and coatings. For ink manufacturing and printing press applications, the HD series and specially fitted PD and ED magdrive pumps are being used.
A leading paint factory manager, states:
“ROTAN® pumps have for decades been used in numerous of our plants. The ED model was chosen due to its magnetic coupling. A magnetically coupled design, which has no rotating seals, ensures less downtime and lower operating costs. Every pump in our new facility is magnetically coupled, and thus we have eliminated the problems associated with packed glands and mechanical seals.”
Coastal & Nearshore
For coastal and nearshore use DESMI provides the well known Ro-Boom product but in smaller sizes whilst maintaining the integrity of the larger product offerings. Alternatively, you may want to consider SPI or a lighter weight boom if there are deployment and recovery considerations or restrictions. Under these circumstances, the Troilboom AF (Air Filled) offers a light weight rapid response solution. It is manufactured as standard in bright orange polyurethane fabric offering durability and strength. Top tension wires are also available to enhance performance.
A wide range of combination skimmers have been developed for the coastal environment. These include weir, brush, disc and belt recovery systems with on-board pumps. This results in systems being able to recover a wide range of oils including emulsions and weathered compounds. An example of this is the Terminator skimmer system.
As the exploration for oil and gas enters areas of greater environmental vulnerability, the need for proven, reliable and robust equipment is doubly important. DESMI continues to answer this challenge with existing as well as specially developed oil spill recovery systems to operate in the most difficult and harsh environments known to man. This equipment is known as the ARCTIC range. This is a special tool kit of systems to enable you to successfully contain, recover and store hydrocarbons in the Arctic environment. In addition, we offer a range of ‘fail safe’ fire booms for use in controlled burning of oil in ice.
For decades DESMI ROTAN® gear pumps have been used throughout the world, successfully pumping a variety of liquids such as sulphate soap, tall oil, pitch fuel/oil, caustic soda, lignin, turpentine, resin, starch, and slurries in the pulp and paper industry.
We have the products, the knowhow and the field experience to be the first choice supplier for positive displacement pump within heavy industry.
Gear pumps are used in high demand applications where a reliable and constant flow is required. High capacity and external lubrication on slide bearings are advantages important for a good process and a reliable pump solution.
We have a specialist range of skimmers and systems to suit the requirements of the industries, including in-tank skimming.
The removal of oil and chemicals from water within the industrial environment is a key requirement – not only due to increased legislation but also because it is considered a dependable and cost effective way to achieve the desired level of water purity.
It can also increase the efficiency of existing installations, such as large scale API oil-water or parallel plate separators, without the need for expensive capex expansions or new builds.
The DESMI skimmers are typically manufactured from high nickel alloys to resist ‘sour’ applications and can be hydraulic, air or low voltage drive. In applications that require ATEX or equal qualification, we can satisfy this requirement.
The DESMI ROTAN® pumps are used for pumping of different sugar products from cane and beet juice to molasses and finished sugar solutions.
The sugar products supplied direct from the sugar mill is chemically neutral whereas imported sugar products may contain small amounts of formic or sulphuric acid in order to prevent fermentation during transportation. Sugar products containing acid may cause corrosion in cast iron pumps so in some cases stainless steel pumps should be used.
Sugar products have to be considered an abrasive liquid which is why the pump material has to be of wear resistant material. Viscosity of sugar products lies between 500 and 20,000cSt dependent on temperature and dry matter (BRIX). Therefore, it is recommended to pay special attention to the viscosity in relation to temperature when selecting a pump.
Seal less pumps has been successfully used and to prevent bearing problems the pumps should be dimensioned to approximately 30 per cent of maximum speed.
Ports, harbours and terminals demand special consideration as the equipment requirements can vary significantly. This could range from the simple, inexpensive environmentally friendly ‘A’ Boom to OilFence, a rugged asymmetric boom. OilFence can boast in excess of 15 years of service in permanent deployment applications and due to its massive reserve buoyancy, it can support ‘fish-net’ suspended from the boom itself.
Many of the recovery systems in the nearshore and shoreline segment can be employed in ports, harbours and terminals. However, we also offer the versatile ‘Mop’ systems which can be installed to influence a large surface area. Indeed, ‘Mop’ skimmers have also proven themselves in the open waters, oil pits and industrial applications.
- including PSV & Salvage packages
In the rugged and harsh environment of the offshore, DESMI is the market leader for boom, recovery systems, burn kits and storage systems for oil spill response.
The world renowned Ro-Boom, which is available up to 3.5 metres in height, is unsurpassed in its manufacture, operation and longevity. It can be supplied in containerised, standard systems with DNV certification. Ideal for deep water offshore operations.
Ro-Boom continues to set the standards for containment and deflection in the challenging offshore applications.
In addition, we have developed the Hi-Seas Speed-Sweep – a sweep system that can be operated effectively up to 3 knots. This is a heavy duty system that is manufactured from Ro-Boom material and can be simply connected to existing boom systems to increase the area of influence.
