Our airsheds are becoming increasingly stressed due to urbanization and economic growth. One consequence is that industrial clients are constantly challenged to address the impacts of their operations. This often means achieving the delicate balance between operational economics and regulatory requirements. Dillon`s expertise in air dispersion modelling is often employed to address these issues. Our dispersion modelling services have been used for automotive assembly and casting plants, automotive painting operations, chemical production industries, sand and gravel processing sites and stone quarries, scrap metal recycling facilities, metal production and metal refineries, food and grain processing plants, and municipal waste treatment facilities. By utilizing our expertise in air dispersion modelling, clients are achieving their business goals within the environmental performance expectations of our modern society.

Air emission regulatory requirements are becoming increasingly stringent for industrial operations across the country. As a result, clients are challenged to demonstrate due diligence and be confident that their emissions are within regulatory limits. Dillon`s extensive source emission testing expertise is called upon to meet this challenge. We apply our comprehensive air emission testing (stack testing) services to address a multitude of due diligence issues. We determine if a process is in compliance with current or proposed emission regulations/operating permit limits, and provide accurate data for the development of air resources management programs.

We recognized early on that the impacts of climate change have the potential to affect our clients in a number of ways. Dillon is a founding member of the ClimAdapt network (www.climadapt.com), a Canadian-based public/private network dedicated to the development and implementation of effective climate change risk management and adaptation strategies. We are currently leading the Climate SMART project, a leading-edge study with the objective of mainstreaming climate change into municipal decision making. We have also contributed to a vulnerability assessment for the Province of Nova Scotia and an overview of health and EMO sector response to extreme events.

Risk assessment has become an important tool in corporate and regulatory decisionmaking. It forms an essential part of any site remediation and redevelopment plan where contaminants are present on-site. While regulatory clean-up guidelines provide generic values that can be applied to almost any site, they are based on very conservative assumptions. Often, these assumptions do not reflect realistic local conditions and thus neither do the clean-up guidelines.

Through our recent merger with ENVision - the Hough Group, Dillon extends its services to institutional clients and corporate clients to include landscape architecture and environmental design. Building on years of experience in the creation of award-winning corporate and institutional sites for both public and private sector clients, our approach can offer significant “brand value” to client projects. Site ecology and environmental management principles are integral to the firm’s design approach, and many of our projects have included the integration of new development with sensitive environmental sites.

While many consulting firms follow their clients in the area of environmental stewardship, in recent years Dillon has helped lead the way, both with and for our clients. Some client requirements involve compliance and permitting. Other clients are concerned about offsets and carbon trading, and product redesign to lower embedded energy and environmental damage and improve product recyclability. Dillon brings an environmental perspective to their organization through broad-based environmental management systems and corporate level strategies.
