Energy Information Centre Limited (EIC) was formed in 1975. Initially, EIC delivered market intelligence to the oil market before expanding into the wider energy market and consultancy services. The company was based in Newmarket, when in 2007, Broadfern, a Redditch based energy consultancy acquired EIC.
Broadfern was originally formed by Eric Butterfield in 1993. Following de-regulation of the UK energy market, Broadfern was able to expand quickly by offering procurement solutions to major energy users looking for the best contract on offer.
Two years after the acquisition in 2009, Broadfern took the unique decision to rebrand as EIC. With its impressive market presence and heritage the EIC brand was a great platform for the combined business. Eric remains EIC Chairman whilst Simon Butterfield who joined Broadfern in 1996 is the EIC Managing Director.
As a company EIC has evolved whilst maintaining the ability to blend key strengths from both previous organisations. The result is a business focused on its clients, energy expertise, financial stability and growth. Based at state of the art offices in Redditch and Bury St Edmunds the expert EIC team of 88 offer a wide range of services to our clients and deal with a total energy portfolio value of £1.2 billion. Today EIC has an estimated 10 per cent share of the energy consultancy market with an £8 million turnover.
When EIC was first established on 7 August 1975, the average UK house price was £12,000; oil was $13 per barrel and petrol was 16 pence per litre. In the financial markets, the Bank of England base rate was 11%, whilst the rate of inflation topped 24%. It’s fair to say that in the years since then, EIC has also changed beyond recognition.
Initially offering market intelligence for the oil market, the portfolio of services offered by EIC has evolved to match our clients’ ever changing requirements.
Below we outline what’s happened over the past 37 years, providing you with a brief history of EIC as well as our key developments. The biggest change in recent years occurred in 2007 when Broadfern acquired EIC. With this in mind, we have also provided more details on Broadfern prior to the acquisition.
Today, EIC is one of the UK’s largest energy consultancies. Financially sound and supporting major energy users across all industry sectors, we’re proud of our achievements and look forward to even more exciting milestones in the years to come.
