Drainage Pipe Leakage
Historically since the first CCTV inspections of sewers the main focus has been on defects such as cracks, fractures, breaks and poorly aligned joints.
The process has been defined over the years by coding different defects based on their ...perceived severity. With standard wording and definitions to give a quantitative assessment of overall condition.
This method works well as a benchmark for assessing structural condition and priority for repair.
Leakage however is more difficult to recognise. Infiltration is often visible but exfiltration is not as clear.
Industrial sites are required to carry out a pollution risk assessment and make provision for spillage, contamination and emergency procedures to avoid pollution or contamination risk.
Some companies make provision to block drains and gully’s in the event of a spill.

They are also required to explore sources of diffuse water pollution, such as “overloaded, leaking or wrongly connected sewerage systems.” This is not always detected during traditional survey techniques.
In industrial applications where pollution risk is present other methods need to be considered as structural assessment may not detect sources of ground contamination.
For advice on pollution Risk Assessment please don’t hesitate to call us.
Leakage is also a very important guide and cause of longer term structural defects.
