Conventional Wastewater Treatment Vs. Nature-based Solutions
Wastewater generating from various domestic, industrial and commercial applications contains lot many pollutants. The biodegradable pollutants present in wastewater can be categorized into organic, inorganic, toxic, poisonous, fouling and in many other. Conventional wastewater treatment plants processes treat the wastewater pollutants by Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Treatment methods. That include Physical, Biological and Chemicals applications for treatment. But, even with comprehensive treatment by conventional methods, many pollutants retain into the final effluent coming from Sewage/Municipal/Domestic (STP), Industrial/Commercial (ETP), as well as combined/Common (CETP) wastewater treatment plants.
The pollutants formed due to mineralization of organic matter in secondary biological treatment remains in mineral form. These pollutants are dissolved substances, which remains untreated during chemical treatment. Due to which Total Carbon Content (TOC), Total Nitrogen Content (TNC) along with Ammoniacal Nitrogen & Kjeldahl Nitrogen, Phosphate, Magnesium, Calcium, Silica, Potassium, heavy metal minerals, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), etc. detected in higher quantity. Once this heavy load of minerals are released into the waterbody, it enhances the growth of local microalgal species causing eutrophication of the waterbody.
Eutrophication reduces the Oxygen content in the water, which kills aqueous species and eventually damages the whole ecosystem by disturbing its food chain. This is the reason that makes conventional wastewater treatment solutions inefficient. Apart from this some wastewater treatments also utilizes membrane based fixed bed and moving bed systems. These options looks promising, but issues with their fouling, maintenance, high energy inputs and cost-effectivity makes them unsustainable.
Nature-based solutions are the environmental processes developed by nature on encountering selectively limited anthropogenic concentrations of pollutants. Natural activities abided to maintain the balance between all environmental changes. It helps to control any drastic ecological change from happening and keep peace at the sub-levels to harmonize with the situation. During this process, microbial life is drastically affected, & they potentially try to adapt to the newly emerging environmental conditions. Slowly adopted micro ecosystem develops that now thrives in polluted conditions and flourishes. This natural phenomenon of bio-acclimatization of microorganisms gives rise to a novel process to curb pollutants called bioremediation.
Along with microorganisms, plant species also alter their behavior when encountered with different concentrations of pollutants. The potential plant species that adopt and sequester pollutants play a significant role in phytoremediation/phytodepuration. So, bioremediation using microorganisms and phytoremediation using plant species are natural processes for wastewater treatment. In nature, wastewater treatment occurs in natural ponds, wetlands covered with mangroves, and heavy plantation and water lagoons.
Similarly, when these natural phenomena are applied for wastewater treatment by artificial means, both natural, as well as artificial resources, are utilized. At the beginning of the process, wastewater is allowed to stabilize and remove suspended solids particles by aggregation, flocculation, and sedimentation in waste stabilization ponds. Then the water slowly flows to artificial wetlands where the plantation of diverse phytoremediation plants sequester many pollutants and clear water to the maximum extent by phytoremediation process. Furthermore, in natural processes, the wastewater from wetlands enters the natural water bodies and water streams.Phycoremediation:
The remaining pollutants and nutrients in the water are consumed by algal/microalgal species that sequester all the dissolved components for their growth. In natural water lagoons, this process is enhanced due to shallow water that allows the penetration of maximum sunlight required by microalgae. This process of wastewater remediation by microalgae is called Phycoremediation. In the last century, various microalgal applications have been explored through extensive research and many technological advancements were registered to utilize microalgal technology in wastewater treatment. That signifies the importance of microalgae in wastewater treatment.
Indeed, microalgae work best to sequester nutrients from wastewater. This simple phenomenon takes place even in aquarium tanks. Wherein fish’s excreta release nutrient-rich dissolved inorganic components on which microalgae grow drastically. Hence, regular maintenance of the aquarium system is required to remove microalgal biomass. Moreover, some enthusiasts grow macroalgae in aquariums to sequester nutrients, due to their ease of maintenance over microalgae.
On pilot and commercial scales, numerous technologies are developed that utilize algae-based solutions for wastewater treatment. General patented technologies comprise algae consortium, algae cultivation systems, advanced engineering and materials for algae cultivation, essential nutrient formulations for enhanced algae cultivation in wastewater, and genetically modified microalgal (GMO) species for improved pollutants scrubbing. Economic and energy-efficient algae harvest technologies, algal byproducts for biorefinery concept, and many others.
Though tremendous research and technology development is happening, implementation of large-scale phycoremediation technology is still not much explored. Inefficiently treated domestic and industrial effluent is very harmful to nature. If wastewater is potentially treated and reused, it will reduce the load on freshwater resources and help maintain the ecological balance for future generations. Therefore, at Everflow Global, with passionate minds, we started our mission to develop zero water discharge technology using phycoremediation. Phycoremediation if amalgamated with advanced wastewater technologies, could provide the best-ever solution for our wastewater-related issues. Our well-versed research team and collaborative technology development partners, develop customized phycoremediation and bioremediation-based wastewater treatment solutions for various wastewater effluents. We welcome all those who seek the best and most cost-effective solution to clean and conserve water for future generations.
