LCA Screenings
One of the first stages of lifecycle assessment is called `Screening`.
It is a very short study using existing data or provisional alternatives to respond to questions such as:
* Comparison of two different types of materials in a product development project.
* Is the use phase dominant and is it justified to invest all our efforts in that phase?
* Does transport have a significant environmental load or is it negligible?
This is a simplified method of LCA used to identify environmental hotspots where emissions of particular interest occur.
Compliance
Risk management and compliance are key factors in how projects are decided and budgets allocated.
Environmental risk is a clear trend and has started to impact on how much we pay for insurance and how we are going to invest in the mid to long term.
Companies and governments have started looking at liability when it comes to environment and sustainability and they have, in some cases, asked themselves if they might be in the same position the tobacco industry was a few years ago...Underestimating the public response to lack of `caring`.
With governments legislating more and more for the environment and a sustainable future, organisations are stepping into a new world of compliance and unclear rules.
That is where we can help.
Information Technology Sustainability
Our core strategy with our clients is to look at the following:
* Inventory of hardware and network equipment
* Evaluation of footprint, current and future measures
* Review of data centres efficiency in collaboration with facilities managers
* Definition of metrics for ongoing assessment of Power Usage Efficiency [PUE] and Datacentre Infrastructure Efficiency [DCiE]
* Development of guidelines and strategy for footprint reduction, increased effectiveness.
We also look at ICT as a possible enabler of innovation, change and efficiency within an organisation.
Typical scope of work will cover:
* ICT procurement
* ICT data centre and operations
* ICT disposal
* ICT-enabled operations
* ICT-enabled value chain
Eco-Design
We work in collaboration with you in the process of reviewing the design processes in your organisation and especially conduct the following:
* researching new types of information (e.g. information on environmental impact of materials, components, processes)
* identifying information sources (both upstream and downstream partners)
* making different types of decisions (e.g. what kind of environmental requirements are to be included in the programme of requirements.)
Carbon Footprint Calculation
Standards
In line with specifications ISO 14064-1:2006 [Greenhouse gases - Part 1: Specification with guidance at the organization level for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals] and with the GHG Protocol corporate accounting and reporting standard, we work with businesses to identify greenhouse gas emissions sources and develop an inventory covering scope 1 and 2 emissions at a minimum.
We work closely with your different departments and business partners to identify and quantify scope 3 emissions.
We report on the data and establish a set of recommendations to reduce and remove your business CO2-e emissions.
Methodology
The main elements of the carbon auditing process are as follow:
* Interviews with key stakeholders
* Walkthrough audit
* Compiling of data found on energy bills and invoices
* Tracking / metering [cars, trucks, generators, boilers, etc]
