In this sector the centrifugal systems are used for the de-watering and for the pre-thickening of sludge in purifying and water treatment plants.

Quarry and drilling sludges are generally considered complex to be treated, due to their high abrasiveness and density; they therefore require high performance centrifuges with high resistance to wear. In quarries the centrifuge is used ideally to de-water the sludge deriving from the extraction minerals, both for the final washing treatment of aggregates and recycling of waste construction material. Regarding horizontal and vertical drilling, the sludge to be treated, in addition to sand, can contain clay and silt, also suspensions of cement and bentonite, which must be separated from the other substances in order to be re-cycled in successive excavation phases or de-watered at the end of the process.

The exponential growth of the world’s population during the last years has created the need to increase underground communication routes, to relieve congested roads and reduce acoustic and environmental pollution in in increasingly overcrowded cities. The modern excavation technologies for Tunnelling envision the use of enormous TBM (Tunnel Boring Machines) and the use of a liquid sludge containing bentonite to seal the walls as soon as the Tunnel is excavated.

Vertical drilling operations, i.e. of the ground, today are performed in the building sector, to create foundations, underground excavations for car parks and underground trains, but also in the field of alternative energy resources, as for example gas fields in the subsurface. Another sector, which has been heavily exploited in recent times, is that of excavation of geothermal wells. Thanks to these, it is possible to make use of the heat coming from inside the earth and produce energy, so-called geothermal energy.
