RARE EARTH CHEMISTRY
GFS has extensive experience in manufacturing and sourcing the widest range of rare earth starting materials. Ultra-purity and ultra-dryness make GFS rare earth chemicals unmatched. We cover the majority of the Lanthanide series by offering rare earths ranging from ACS reagent grade through 99.99+ percent purity.
GFS is primary in both Cerium III and IV chemistries. Some of the most demanding customers rely on GFS for their commercial applications.
GFS is a leading manufacturer of perchloric acids and salts. Our perchlorate chemistry results in the manufacture of high purity perchlorates including: magnesium perchlorate, lithium perchlorate, potassium perchlorate and sodium perchlorate salts to name just a few.
REDUCED MOI STURE PERCHLORATES
Our reduced-moisture perchlorates have a hygroscopic character that requires packaging in ampoules and handling in a rigorously dry environment. They can be used as catalysts in reactions that are only moderately sensitive to moisture.
GFS can supply many high purity lithium compounds, including lithium salts, lithium carbonate, lithium perchlorate and lithium iodide. Unlike some chemical manufacturers, GFS produces our lithium compounds from virgin lithium hydroxide – not from low-cost, low-quality lithium raw material residues. Purity levels for some GFS lithium products can exceed 99.99 percent.
LITHIUM ION CHEMISTRY IN ORGANIC SYNTHESIS
Anhydrous LiClO4 in diethyl ether has an uncommon solubility. The concept of “naked ion” Li+ chemistries in organic media has broad synthetic implications. GFS can offer a valuable collection of reactions and references to novel synthetic schemes promoted by perchlorate salts. GFS offers a free 44-page monograph entitled Practical Use of Anhydrous LiClO4 and Mg(ClO4)2 in Organic Synthesis.
Ultra High Purity Acid Distillation and Specialty Acid Manufacturing
Since 1956, through proprietary technology, GFS has perfected the distillation process to produce ultra-high purity acids to part-per-billion and part-per-trillion purity levels. We can supply nitric, hydrochloric, perchloric and sulfuric acids along with a host of trace metal grade acids. We supply some of the highest purity acids in the world today with virtually no trace contaminants whatsoever.
Our iodic and periodic acid are unmatched in purity due to our unique manufacturing processes. We also provide bulk packaging options for process applications requiring specific impurity profiles. Our expertise extends to the production of our reagent grade acids, which can be produced in metric tons and supplied in drums.
Inorganic Drying and Packaging
Because of the refinement of our moisture control technologies, GFS has built a world-class reputation in the manufacture of anhydrous fine chemicals, specialty chemicals and temperature-sensitive chemicals. We have a state-of-the-art dedicated dry room for production and packaging, where constant dew point and humidity are maintained. Our drying technology will continue to evolve as customers challenge us with more specific anhydrous requirements.
85+ Years of Manufacturing Specialty Chemicals & Building Long-term Customer Relationships
- Our Founder, G. Frederick Smith, was a Professor of Analytical Chemistry (University of Illinois). His interest in developing both inorganic chemicals and organic ligands as analytical reagents had a profound effect on development of analytical methodologies from 1930 to the 1950's.
- Many of the insights Smith gleaned from the development of specialty analytical reagents were shared with the broader scientific community in the form of technical monographs and books published by the company and distributed at no charge. Perchlorates and Rare Earths continue to be topics of great interest to this day. The dissemination of technical and safety information on GFS chemical specialties remains among the highest of the company's current priorities.
- Smith used careful engineering practices and sound chemical insight to extend the techniques that he used to develop analytical reagents on a small scale to multi-ton chemical manufacturing capacities. GFS is a primary manufacturer of a surprising variety of difficult-to-source and difficult-to-make specialty chemicals.
- Recognition of the demand for increasingly pure chemical reagents allowed GFS to be one of the first to master the distillation of inorganic acids as well as specialty organics. GFS Trace Metal grade mineral acids provided the semiconductor industry with some of its first acids certified to sub-part per billion impurity levels.
Internal development of GFS chemical manufacturing technologies has consistently been supplemented through acquisition of outside product lines and business units. Examples include pyridine-free Watermark® Karl Fischer reagents; analytical reagent grade quaternary ammonium salts and solutions; Organic Halogen Reagent; and the Farchan line of acetylenic, olefinic and silyl chemical intermediates.
So it is by design that GFS offers strength in all three segments of chemical manufacturing: Inorganic specialties, Organic intermediates and Analytical reagents. Such broad capabilities are especially valuable in an age of increasingly interdisciplinary chemical technologies. Combine this with traditional, personal service that you can only find in a family company environment and you have a good understanding of why so many customers regard GFS as their preferred specialty chemical manufacturer.
- Organic Specialty Intermediates
- Inorganic Chemicals and Catalysts
- Analytical Reagents and Solutions
The GFS chemical manufacturing program features three core technologies that, at first glance, might not seem to be very interdependent. However, a closer look at a novel organic reagent system, Lithium Perchlorate in Diethyl Ether, shows how specialty chemical development pathways can cross at unusual points.
GFS has been involved with Inorganic perchlorate chemistries since the 1920's. Recently, the technology to dry bulk lithium perchlorate to moisture levels below 300 ppm has opened up new opportunities in the use of LiClO4-diethyl ether (and other solvents) to promote novel synthetic organic chemical syntheses in bulk.
The GFS experience in Rare Earth chemistry and advanced material drying technologies has led to bulk chemical manufacturing of dry cerous chloride, an Inorganic reagent that activates C=O groups toward reaction with various organometallic synthetic intermediates.
The GFS organic chemical manufacturing group also makes a one molar solution of sodium biphenyl in ethyl diglyme, which is used in the analysis of organic halides (OHR). There are many good examples of how GFS can be an especially valuable resource for organic and inorganic research chemicals as well as analytical reagents.
