Remediation of Acid Mining Lakes Services

Acid mining lakes are not a suitable habitat for higher organisms because substances such as calcium needed by fish for their development are absent. In the past, neutralising entire acid lakes so that they can be populated by fish and used for leisure activities was only possible with inordinate amounts of resources. Since 1998, the UFZ has been testing alternative methods at Mining Lake 111, not far from the town of Lauchhammer in the state of Brandenburg.

Social-Science Water Research Services

The Working Group on Social-Science Water Research examines economic, political, social and legal aspects of the use and management of water. It aims at the development of concepts and social science contributions towards a sustainable, integrated and adaptive water resources management under the conditions of global change.
