Hydrodec is transforming the way energy conducts business. To end the world's dependence upon finite oil supplies and use existing resources more efficiently seems like a lofty idea, but this was the genesis of Hydrodec. Hydrodec secures and re-manufactures specialty mineral oil products and provides environmentally sustainable petrochemical materials management.

A global company with a small carbon footprint, Hydrodec is a cost effective, cradle-to-cradle operation offering a unique refining process with capabilities across the petrochemical and oil refining industries.

Sustainability, innovation, and a commitment to excellence. Continuing to develop new markets and products, this is just the beginning of the Hydrodec story...

In the early 1990's an engineer had an idea. What if we can stop consuming oil and better use the resources we have without compromising quality and reliability? That idea has become Hydrodec Group plc.

In 1992, the Australian power industry tasked the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) to find a way to remove hazardous cancer-causing PCBs from used transformer oil and restore the oil to a condition that met all international standards for new transformer oil.

The team’s commitment and perseverance paid off, and within eight years, their results not only met industry expectations, it exceeded them. CSIRO was not only able to remove the PCBs from the transformer oil, the product they developed often out-performed new oil. Moreover, unlike any other process in the world, they could refine the transformer oil an indefinite number of times, allowing utilities to reduce their reliance on new oil supplies without sacrificing quality or performance.

The technology was patented, and in 2001, Hydrodec was formed, with global rights to commercialise the technology and the knowledge behind it. Hydrodec collects used transformer oil and manufactures, markets and distributes SUPERFINE™ transformer oil and naphthenic base oil at their facilities in Young, NSW Australia and Canton, Ohio USA with plans to expand to more facilities in Japan. The Group has been listed on AIM, the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange, since 2004.

Hydrodec Group is a public company with global ownership of patented know-how in the application of sustainable technology for the power, oil, petrochemical and hazardous waste industries and a commitment to creation of sustainable value for shareholders, communities, customers and partners alike.

The very foundations of Hydrodec Group lie in the principle that a financially successful and sustainable business must by definition firstly be sustainable in its use and consumption of resources and responsible in all interactions with its communities, customers and shareholders.

Hydrodec is committed to creating value for all stakeholders by investing in and applying technology and know-how for increased efficiency, reduced cost and decreased dependency on finite global resources. We are committed to achieving these goals with reduced environmental impact and increased resource efficiency for all our customers and within our own operations.

Our goals can only be achieved through a commitment to conducting ourselves sustainably, ethically and legally, in all facets of our business.

To support the foundations of the company Hydrodec has built into its culture, at the most fundamental level, a decision framework for all employees, contractors and partners, to guide all actions of the company.

Our technologies are low energy, low carbon, low emission and driven by the principles of sustainability.

Imagine transforming something that was considered waste into a renewable product with an infinite lifecycle. This is precisely what Hydrodec’s patented process does. Used naphthenic-based transformer oil, both non-PCB and PCB-regulated, is made better than new.

In 1992. Australia’s government-backed Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) conducted research for the nation’s power industry to find a way to deconstruct polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), the potential cancer-causing organic compounds in naphthenic distillate (transformer oil). PCBs were routinely added to enhance the performance of transformer oil until banned in the 1970’s.

The result was nothing short of remarkable - an almost zero emission (de minimis in the US) process yielding a product that meets, if not exceeds, the relevant industry standards for new transformer oil.

This newly refined oil, now known as SUPERFINE™, often out performs new oil. Even better, this has the ability to be refined again and again without compromising quality or performance, all in accordance with the appropriate regulations.

The Hydrodec technology is a true catalytic process.

At Hydrodec’s existing facilities in Young, NSW and Canton, Ohio, the used oil is added into a recirculating hydrogen stream. Hydrodec’s patented hydrogen treatment mix is heated to a reaction temperature in a direct contact heater and this mix is passed down through a hydrotreating catalyst within the main reactor. This is where the refining action takes place. The catalyst is a spectator to the reaction and is neither consumed nor wasted. This mix leaves the catalyst and the excess hydrogen is separated and recirculated back to the beginning of the process where it is used again and again. The refined oil is quenched, water washed and once this water is removed is deemed SUPERFINE™.

Refining makes the molecules stronger and delivers a cleaner, longer-lasting better performing oil.

Hydrodec’s patented process recovers nearly 100% of the naphthenic distillate with near zero emissions and no hazardous waste associated with traditional refining. It removes and in fact deconstructs all PCBs.

Every one million gallons of naphthenic distillate refined by Hydrodec has the same CO2 reduction value as the installation of a 6MW wind farm.

Hydrodec's Board of Directors and Management view good corporate governance as key to business success and fundamental to the creation of sustainable value.

Good for Business. Good for the Planet.

Hydrodec offers the best of both worlds. SUPERFINE™ transformer oil meets the relevant industry standards for new transformer oil and can be described as a truly sustainable and renewable petroleum product. Hydrodec breathes new life into used transformer oil that is at the very end of its life cycle. A product that would otherwise be disposed of, is put through Hydrodec’s patented process and transformed into a superior quality product. It’s all done without sacrifice to performance, operating costs or the planet.

Each ton of oil refined through the Hydrodec system conserves more than one ton of limited global crude oil reserves and yields near zero emissions with no hazardous by-products. By conserving crude oil reserves, utilities and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) also avoid CO2 production from the crude oil extraction and refining process.

Every one million gallons of naphthenic distillate refined by Hydrodec has the same CO2 reduction value as the installation of a 6MW wind farm.

It’s a win/win situation. Used transformer oil is safely removed and replaced with competitively priced SUPERFINE™ transformer oil, which not only has been known to outperform 1st generation transformer oil, but does so without depleting the planet’s natural resources.

Our goal is to develop and sustain a culture that provides opportunities for continuously improving Health & Safety performance across the entire Hydrodec Group.
