The Company
The Company
ICEsonic strives to become world’s top dry ice blasting manufacturer. Our sophisticated manufacturing facility is utilizing the latest available technology in solid modelling based CAD design, CNC machining, laser-cutting and CNC bending. Our welders are specialists in welding stainless steels and exotics. Our complement of engineers is constantly striving for new and improved products through close and in-depth relationships with our distributors and clients.
Behind each project there is a good organization and structure. ICEsonic starts each project according to a fixed protocol, after receiving the order a complete project protocol starts. This way, the status of the project is visible at all times, and supplying a product and service of the utmost integrity and honesty is achieved.
What Is Dry Ice Blasting?
Dry ice blasting is a form of media blasting, similar to sand blasting, plastic bead blasting, or soda blasting but substitutes dry ice as the blasting medium. Dry ice, the solid form of carbon dioxide, is accelerated in a pressurized air stream and directed at a surface in order to clean it.
Applications
ICEsonic dry ice blasting machines have a wide range of cleaning applications. They can be used to clean equipment without disassembly and without producing fire or electrical hazards. The EPA recommends dry ice blasting as an alternative to many types of solvent-based cleaning. ICEsonic dry ice blasting machines can clean numerous objects with differing and complex geometries.

At ICEsonic, we take environmental issues seriously. We will continue to enhance our business operations, thereby adding value to future generations with effort from every team member towards achieving the company’s goal.
Dry Ice is completely environmentally friendly
In addition to being clean and safe, it is also important to remember that dry ice is obtained as a by-product of other industrial processes – i.e. it is made from reclaimed CO2. It does not produce CO2 or add CO2 to the atmosphere and therefore does not contribute to the greenhouse effect. Dry ice blasting is truly, and completely, environmentally friendly! Dry ice is an approved medium by the EPA, USDA & FDA, and is non-toxic, non-hazardous and inhibits mold & bacteria growth. Dry ice blasting has been effectively used in EPA, USDA, FDA, AIB and GFSI inspected/certified facilities. It is safe to use on food processing equipment, CO2 does not release harmful gases into the atmosphere also does not generate secondary waste. Also, CO2 is a natural element of the earth, comprising about 0.03% of our atmosphere. All humans and animals give off CO2 which is used by plants to help them grow. The CO2 industry and its users have a very minimal role in adding to the greenhouse effect and as legislation continues with stricter air and water regulations, dry ice blasting will step forward to replace harmful detergent and solvent pollution and their disposal problems. Dry ice blasting reduces or eliminates employee exposure to (and corporate liability from) the use of dangerous chemical cleaning agents.
Minimizing Hazardous Waste
The cost of hazardous waste removal can be monumental, and the typical cleaning methods magnify the problem many times over because the cleaning materials — water, solvents, sand etc. — become secondary contamination once coming in contact with the primary contaminant. They must be treated as hazardous waste as well. Since CO2 sublimates upon contact with the target surface, no secondary waste accumulates. This can amount to truly tons of savings. The volume of hazardous waste is reduced to minimal amounts, and the return on investment from converting over to dry ice blasting can be attained very, very quickly.
Report: Department of Energy
Supporting this, the DOE’s Office of Environmental Management produced a report regarding the Los Alomos National Laboratory. The report presented the case that the facility could achieve a 640% return on investment by converting over to a CO2 blasting system saving over $13,000,000 over the course of a ten year life cycle. Today, the dry ice method of cleaning is quickly becoming favoured for environmental as well as production reasons. Because of tremendous environmental regulations, industry has need to minimize wastes. Further, there is a growing consciousness that many are placing now on the global environmental impact of their production practices. However, these benefits are accentuated due to the tremendous performance gains through dry ice blasting — little or no production downtime, quality of clean and minimized damaged to equipment.

Dry-ice blasting involves propelling pellets at extremely high speeds. Upon impact, the pellet sublimates almost immediately, transferring minimal kinetic energy to the surface on impact and producing minimal abrasion. The sublimation process absorbs a large volume of heat from the surface, producing shear stresses due to thermal shock. This is assumed to improve cleaning as the top layer of dirt or contaminant is expected to transfer more heat than the underlying substrate and flake off more easily. The efficiency and effectiveness of this process depends on the thermal conductivity of the substrate and contaminant. The rapid change in state from solid to gas also causes microscopic shock waves, which are also thought to assist in removing the contaminant.
Pellets’ Kinetic Energy Transfer
Dry ice pellets are propelled out of the blasting gun at supersonic speed and impact the surface. The energy transfer knocks off the contaminant without abrasion. The force of this impact is the primary means of cleaning.
Micro-Thermal Shock Effect
The cold temperature of the dry ice pellets hitting the contaminant creates a micro-thermal shock (caused by the low dry ice temperature) between the surface contaminant and the substrate. Cracking and delaminating of the contaminant occurs furthering the elimination process.
Rapid Gas Expansion
The final phase has the dry ice pellet explode on impact, and as the pellet warms it converts to a harmless CO2 gas which expands rapidly underneath the contaminant surface. This forces off the contaminant from behind. The contaminant is then relocated, typically falling to the ground. Since the dry ice evaporates, only the contaminant is left for disposal.
