Iwokrama International Centre (IIC)

Iwokrama - the Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation and Development (IIC) – was the result of offer made in 1989 by then President of Guyana, Desmond Hoyte, on the occasion of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malaysia. This joint mandate between the Commonwealth and the Government of Guyana to manage Guyana’s Iwokrama Forest was successfully cemented in 1996 with the passing of the Iwokrama Act.
