Freshly cut plant waste containing little wood as it frequently occurs as waste from cutting in garden, landscape, roadside and forest maintenance is usually referred to as green waste. The spectrum of plants ranges here from grasses, green shrubbery to green wood such as branches with a high proportion of leaves/foliage.
High-quality composts and fermented residues can be produced from cleanly separated bio-wastes with low foreign body content which are suitable for agricultural or gardening use. These wastes include bio-wastes from households (kitchen and garden wastes) and commercial, garden and park wastes as well as food wastes, wastes from food processing and agricultural wastes.
Bark refers to all tissue outside the central cylinder on the plant stem and root of vascular plants. Bark is a by-product of all enterprises which remove bark from tree trunks. Approximately 4 million m³ of tree bark are produced annually in Germany in the course of wood utilization. Of this, 1 to 1.5 million m³ can be considered technically available.
This root wood has a lower lumber industry value and is only recoverable at great effort. It is, however, of ecological value.
