Landell Mills Limited was founded in Bath, England, in 1975 by John Landell Mills and others to carry out research and to provide management services in the natural resource sectors. Some of the firm's early work included farm management in Zambia as well as advice on commodity trends and opportunities. In the 1980s and 1990s, the company provided technical assistance and advice in many aspects of agriculture, fisheries and rural development on contracts financed by the Asian Development Bank, European Commission and the World Bank - as well as the bilateral assistance programmes of the UK government. The 1990s was particularly active as demand for expertise increased dramatically in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union under the Phare and Tacis programmes of the EC in particular.
In recent years, the firm has widened its scope of activities to reflect the changing needs of beneficiaries and funding agencies as well as new opportunities and threats. We are active in a range of economic development and environmental programmes. A number of our assignments are in countries recovering from conflicts or natural disasters.
We estimate that we have completed over 700 projects on all continents - involving almost 150 countries. We operate in several languages and employ some four hundred people on our assignments at any one time. Our head office is in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, UK. We have two sister companies in Ireland - TDI Group Ltd. and TMS International Ltd.
We aim to provide practical, hands-on, experienced and flexible advisers and trainers for our assignments and to back them up by competent and responsive supervision as well as strong administrative and financial back-up. Our business model is one of business development and project supervision at our head office with specially selected project teams in the field. Our head office staff are grouped into four strategic business units – three geographical units and one for framework contracts – each comprising a dedicated, experienced director and supported by a team of executives. We also have a central finance team.
